Skilled pharmacy support work assisting the pharmacists in providing pharmacy services for health department pharmacy eligible clients and related work as apparent or assigned by supervising pharmacist, in accordance with the Drug Enforcement Agency, North Carolina pharmacy laws, and Cleveland County Health Department policies and procedures. Work is performed and supervised under the Pharmacy Manager and/or Staff Pharmacist. Work schedule may vary during normal pharmacy hours of operation, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Greets customers, staff, and healthcare providers directly and via phone, and assists them with their needs in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner. Performs technical and clinical duties including screening patients for eligibility, recording data in patient profiles, processing prescriptions, and preparing prescriptions, involving counting, packaging, and labeling medications, as ordered and appropriate. Receives and maintains accurate inventory of medications, vaccines, and other pharmaceutical supplies, including monitoring for proper storage and tracking lot numbers and expiration dates. Operates Point-of-Sale (POS) system and cash registers to process payments and complete prescription transactions. Assists clients in completing and submitting Medication Assistance Program applications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology and processing techniques; general knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs; general knowledge of and ability to operate pharmacy equipment, such as pharmacy computer systems and POS computer systems/ cash registers; ability to extract relevant information from prescription forms by reading and transcribing its content; ability to fill and prepare prescriptions accurately with limited supervision; accuracy and attention to detail concerning drug qualities and quantities and to label drugs correctly as to type and strength; strong clerical skills and ability to perform basic math calculations; strong sense of urgency; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively in oral or written forms.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program, or High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of pharmacy or health care related experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing for 6-8 hour shift, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) are preferred, but not required
North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is preferred.
A new Pharmacy Technician hired but not already registered with the NC Board has 180 days from hire date to comply. Annual renewal with the NC State Board of Pharmacy is required.
Active Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) is preferred.
