COMPENSATION: $162,302 - $218,712 annually
Pay scale for this role is benchmarked against a third-party source regarded as the gold standard for provider compensation data

JOB SUMMARY:
The Physician Assistant for the Urology Department will assist in medical and surgical care patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting by assisting in surgical cases, completing hospital rounds, conducting outpatient clinic, and by preparing appropriate documentation/billing of all evaluations, care, and services. This position will provide quality patient care, ensuring service excellence as evidenced by patient satisfaction scores and testimonials, ensuring protection of patient privacy rights under HIPAA, and other applicable policies and/or regulations. The position will also advise and give direction to surgical team members, clinic staff members.

EDUCATION
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program

- Demonstrate good fundamental medical knowledge to exercise sound clinical judgment.
- Demonstrate good written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrate ability to multitask, prioritize, and maintain professionalism during times of stress.
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
- License to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of California, including maintaining board certification.
- DEA license.
- Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
PATIENT PRIVACY (HIPAA Compliance):
Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographic information, date of service information, insurance/billing information, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires this patient health information in order to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Surgery:
- Functions as a member of the surgical team by providing direct and indirect patient care to patients undergoing urology procedures
- Prepares patients for surgery, review medical history and labs.
- May be asked to First Assist in occasional non-urologic robotic surgical procedures.
- Provides post-operative surgical care to patients on an as necessary basis i.e., evaluates patient’s physical condition to ensure no secondary complications have occurred due to surgery, removes drains/sutures/staples, debrides wounds, or provide other perioperative care needs.
- Provides specific patient care as needed in accordance with established policies and protocols.
Inpatient:
- Completes clinical rounds on inpatients and documents medical plan of care after reviewing with attending surgeon.
- Provides routine medical management of inpatient care including ordering of diagnostic tests, labs, x-rays, medications (within the scope of the PA license) and nutrition.
- Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and communication of treatment plans with physician, nursing staff, case management and families.
- Initiates appropriate emergency care until the arrival of the attending physician.
- Conducts minor procedures (under the direction and supervision of the Attending Physician), including but not limited to: urethral catheter placement, bladder irrigation.
- Performs urology inpatient, and ER consults. May be required to take call for urologic patients under the supervision of an attending surgeon.
- Completes appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered in the medical record. Post charges appropriately and in a timely manner
- Conducts and coordinates patient’s hospital discharge process i.e., dictate discharge summary, informs and instructs patient on current condition and follow up care including outpatient, therapy and services, usage of medications, etc.; interacts with family members and/or other health care professionals relative to patient needs, etc.; all in accordance with established policies and protocols, under the guidance of the attending surgeon.
- Provides education to staff.
Outpatient:
- Provides clinic care in outpatient clinic and participates in initial evaluation and longitudinal care. Obtains medical history and physical examination
- Performs pre- and post– operative patient education to patients and their families
- Acts as a resource person throughout the hospital and community for information on urologic surgery.
- May be required to take call for urologic patients under the supervision of an attending surgeon.
- Perform minor procedures under the direction of the attending physician. Procedures to include minor wound care, ultrasound, catheter placement or exchange, injections or medication administration.
- Call patients with results and provide plan of care. Maintain proper records
- Participate in ongoing staff development.
- Completes appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered in the medical record. Post charges appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Responds to telephone inquiries on discharged patients and provides appropriate medical care or counseling.
- Communicates with referring or primary care physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
- Participates in maintenance of patient outcomes database
- Provides follow-up and health maintenance care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from the Attending Physician.
- Completes medication refill authorizations, radiology requests, laboratory slips, and disability papers as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned. - Completes other tasks as requested by physician, clinical supervisor, or director of perioperative services.
