The Plumber II will be part of the Facilities Management Division located in Gaithersburg, Maryland . This Division of 118 staff provides for the care and maintenance of the Department’s physical assets including facilities, pavement, fleet, and major building systems. With a budget over $13 million dollars, the division is responsible for facility condition assessments, major and minor maintenance programs, and serves as the primary support to the Department’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). The division strives to achieve a balance between the upkeep of aging facilities and new construction by integrating a number of CIP and major maintenance projects into the daily work program each year.

Job Summary:
The Plumber II, under supervision, is responsible for performing a full range of difficult, skilled plumbing and gas fitting work involving considerable responsibility, complexity, and variety. Performs installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of plumbing/gas fitting systems at Commission buildings, structures, and properties. May direct activities of the other Plumbers, Trades Apprentices, and Park/General Maintenance Workers. Applies considerable knowledge of standard plumbing practices and methods, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) plumbing/gas fitting codes and National Fuel codes, building, and fire codes, and piping systems involving water, sewer, natural gas, propane gas, air and venting requirements. Performs other duties, as assigned.
Tools and Equipment:
- Inspects and troubleshoots plumbing systems for problems, damages, or necessary repairs
- Installs, repairs, and maintains circulatory pumps involving potable water, domestic hot water, pool heaters, hot water exchange coils and irrigation systems.
- Uses a variety of tools and equipment to install, maintain, repair, replace or modify plumbing systems and natural gas and propane piping systems in compliance with Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) codes and national fuel codes.
- Drives motor vehicles to carry workers and haul tools, equipment, materials, and supplies to job sites; loads and unloads trucks of tools, equipment, supplies and materials.
Projects:
- Contacts inspectors to schedule inspections of projects.
- Hot water exchange coils and irrigation systems.
- Installs, tests, and certifies back flow prevention devices and repairs.
- Assigns, trains, and checks work of other Plumbers, Trades Apprentices and Park/General Maintenance Workers.
- Contacts utility company before digging.
- Performs critical Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance work to remove barriers.
Administrative:
- Receives work orders for plumbing/gas fitting projects.
- Reads and interprets building plans, blueprints, sketches, and mechanical drawings.
- Completes required administrative paperwork and record-keeping, such as automated Enterprise Asset Management work order systems.
- Checks invoices to ensure materials are received and delivered.
- Solicits quotes from required vendors to accomplish work and troubleshoot work progress or equipment.
Important Skills and Characteristics
- Considerable knowledge of standard plumbing practices and methods
- Knowledge of Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) plumbing/gas fitting codes and National Fuel codes.
- Considerable knowledge of Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), building, and fire codes.
- Considerable knowledge of piping systems involving water, sewer, natural gas, propane gas, air, and venting requirements.
- Skill in operation of plumbing hand and power tools; light construction equipment
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Completion of an approved plumbing/gas fitting apprentice program or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience.
- Two (2) years of experience at the journey level.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
- Valid Journey Plumber License and Gas Fitter Certification issued by appropriate local jurisdiction.
- Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
- Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements may be required.
- Pass Commission medical examination.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to stall and maintain natural gas and propane systems.
- Ability to test and install backflow preventer devices.
- Ability to install gas lines for heating systems and hot water units.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, building plans, sketches, and schematic drawings to determine the type of equipment, materials, and methods to utilize.
