Mission

Fork Union Military Academy's Mission is to educate, develop, and insprire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military structured environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, responsibility and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth. In this mission, our Coaches are the heart of our leadership program and foster personal development with daily interaction and the ability to teach, advise and coach our Cadets.

Description

Prep Football Coaches are responsible for cadet-athlete development on a mind, body, spirit level; promoting a positive environment, coordinating team needs with the Athletic Director's office, and developing a program to further promote the Academy. Coaches are tasked with coordinating with Admissions to encourage cadet enrollment to better their team and the Academy, promoting safe sport environment, and leading by example. Coaches shall be further willing to adhere to, enforce, encourage, and instruct per the Academy's mission and core values to all Cadets.

Essential Job Functions

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate cadet accountability for all team functions
  • Supervise and coordinate practices and events with the Athletic Director's office
  • Ensure adult supervision for football activities to include while players are in the locker room, during transportation, before and after athletic contests, and during any meeting/coaching sessions
  • Oversee the inventory of team equipment and uniforms, distribution and collection of items at the beginning and closing of season respectively
  • Oversee assistant coaches, assign duties as deemed necessary for program development, and the evaluation process for assistant coaches
  • Oversee or assign a coach for the direct supervision of cadets while in the weight room for team training
  • Properly track and document the purchase of items for the program as necessary, in coordination with the Athletic Director.
  • Ensure that Academy rules, regulations, and expectations are upheld while cadets are engaged in athletic activities


Coaching:

  • Ensure proper safety technique and skill are implemented with the team to reduce the risk of injuries
  • Encourage a positive environment and good sportsmanship
  • Coordinate transportation for athletic contests as necessary
  • Communicate with the Athletics department regarding team scheduling, athletic contests, and coordination of team operations as deemed necessary
  • Oversee and direct the set up and break down of events or contests as directed by the Athletic Director
  • Assist with ordering of athletic gear and supplies as assigned by the Athletic Director while adhering to budgetary guidelines as assigned by the CFO
  • Assist with ordering of cadet meals when games conflict with normal meal times as assigned by the Athletic Director while adhering to budgetary guidelines as assigned by the CFO
  • Greet visiting teams and assist in home events or contests (multi-sport as assigned)
  • Coordinate with laundry for the services needed for the prep football teams
  • Conduct laundry services for the prep football program when the laundry custodian is off duty and an event is sponsored
  • Oversee, encourage, and conduct regular cleaning in the football locker and shower/bathroom areas, and athletic gear for cadets and coaches (some weekend duties may apply)
  • Work with the housekeeping department to schedule deep cleanings in the football locker room areas as needed

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing a positive image for the Academy by embracing the positive cadet experience
  • Ability to coordinate, assist, or run summer youth football camps or experiences
  • Build trust and communicate effectively with cadets, parents, community and Academy
  • Set goals with participating cadets for their sports performance as well as academic performance
  • Focus on retention and internal recruitment of cadet athletes with an emphasis on positive progress for their goals and future development
  • Make sound decisions and remain calm under stressful circumstances
  • Actively promote growth in the athletics department
  • Uphold a standard for excellence in coaching to produce athletes that may have the ability to play at the next level
  • Actively work to promote cadets to college coaches to play at the next level
    • This may include break time duties to assist in transporting and promoting exposure of cadet athletes
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties or responsibility as determined by supervision, administration, or the President's office

  • Must have a working knowledge of coaching, specialty (football), and best practices for cadet development

  • Ability to obtain the following certifications:
    • Activity Vehicle Training
    • CPR/AED Certifications, Concussion Certification and Child Abuse/Neglect Training
  • Ability to complete the following requirements:
    • Travel to athletic competitions and professional meetings
    • Perform evening or weekend duties


Education and Experience:

  • Must have at least a Bachelor's Degree
  • Previous experience recruiting for athletics is required
  • Previous coaching of collegiate athletics is preferred
  • Previous experience coaching youth in middle school and high school settings is required
  • Experience interacting with youth programs preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Hours of work may be conditionally flexible during seasonal events, or as directed by the Academy's needs
  • Ability to perform work outdoors; withstand inclement weather and other environmental conditions for extended periods of time
  • Ability to climb three flights of stairs and carry at least 35 pounds
  • Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 35 pounds as needed
  • Ability to sit, stand, or squat as needed.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug testing
  • Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, or working on a computer may be deemed necessary at any time
