As one of the large clinical entities of UCSF Health, the Faculty Practice is a unified management structure and integrated operating unit that provides the highest quality, cost competitive, ambulatory care to a diverse and complex patient population in multiple locations in San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area counties In partnership with department chairs and UCSF Health System leaders, the President of Faculty Practices directs and manages all UCSF ambulatory faculty physician practices with specific focus on their operations and performance. Duties include oversight of access, quality, patient experience, and financial performance of faculty practices. The President collaborates with the Vice President of Faculty Practice Operations and the Vice President of Faculty Practice Finance in the duties of financial management, budgeting, staffing, reporting, compliance, monitoring, and all related day-to-day functions of the UCSF physician faculty practice organization. Responsible for ensuring high quality and safe care delivery as well as leading the patient and family experience and clinician and staff engagement, this position will coordinate to ensure effective utilization of personnel and financial resources and execute policy formulated by the UCSF Health Leadership Council. This position will engage directly with service-specific Executive Medical Directors, medical directors and clinical department chairs.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

MD Degree required; Current CA MD License required.

  • A minimum of seven to ten years of progressive management experience, preferably within an academic medical center and/or large integrated health system.
  • Proven experience managing large and complex multi-site and/or multi-specialty physician practice. operations, including responsibility for financial management including physician billing, physician and staff engagement, and patient experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of local and national quality and safety regulations, standards and trends.
  • Ability to lead change initiatives and to drive results.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with Health System faculty and staff, external partners and other stakeholders as appropriate.
  • A strong leader who can coalesce and incent diverse constituencies, including groups of specialized and distinguished faculty.
  • An understanding of how to achieve results in an academic environment, with an ability to balance competing and sometimes conflicting interests.
  • Demonstrated health system-related business acumen, including proficiency in contracting, strategic planning and network development.

This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

  • Monitoring the financial health of all departments, taking corrective action with the departmental leaders when necessary.
  • Instituting common clinical performance guidelines, based on agreed upon national benchmarks and enforcing these performance standards.
  • Effectively creating incentives and systems that yield optimal performance as benchmarked against Vizient and MGMA.
  • Entertaining creative solutions that optimize business performance while maintaining excellent patient care and supporting the broader missions of the academic medical center.

The ideal candidate must be able to build outstanding relationships at all levels of the organization in an environment that is managed through influence and relationships and not just positional power. He/she will accomplish this by:
Actively meeting with and listening to key leaders across the Health System and community to understand the different perspectives and opinions.
