Primary Grade Instructional Assistant (bilingual preferred)

Erie Elementary Charter School is built on the strong foundation of the nationally accredited Childcare program at Erie Neighborhood House, a progressive social service agency serving Chicago's West Town community for 150 years. Located in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, Erie Elementary Charter School opened in September 2005 and serves 415 students in kindergarten through eighth grade in both a dual language and general education setting.

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT RESPONSIBILITIES

Building Positive School Culture & Classroom Environment

• Continually communicate and live the school’s mission and vision

• Acknowledge each student’s cultural and linguistic experience as an asset for the child’s own development and that of the other students

• Demonstrate strong and effective classroom management rooted in Responsive Classroom and Trauma-Informed practices

• Communicate high academic and behavior standards through words and actions

JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate with lead teacher to complement instruction

• Lead/Support small group instruction, read-alouds, table work

• Support with individual student data collection, as needed

• Support and sometimes lead all or a portion of Morning Meeting (morning message, greeting, share, activity)

• Creating and maintaining student work folders - check and organize folders daily/weekly and pass back papers as needed

• Copies, laminate items, sharpen pencils, organize supplies, as needed

• Support and manage snack time and quiet time

• Pick up students the morning, as designated on daily schedule

• Actively participating in class, reinforcing positive student behaviors using specific language

• Support classroom management strategies and activities

• Redirect students, as needed, and support Take a Break spot, breaks outside the classroom, and re-teaching, movement breaks, conflict resolution (Peace Path), etc.

• Model and use language and tone aligned with Responsive Classroom and Erie’s approach to teaching and learning

• Attends and participates in workshops and in service training/professional development, as necessary, to update job related skills

• Knows and uses school mission and vision to direct daily work and decision-making

• Promotes a professional and respectful working environment

• Supervises lunch times with students and other common areas within the school

• Actively participates in at least one school committee

• When lead teacher is absent, takes the lead in the classroom in lieu of a substitute teacher

• Participate in committees and initiatives that advance student learning and Erie’s Mission and Vision

• Initiate and pursue professional development opportunities both inside and outside of the school

• Remain open to constructive feedback, coaching, and continual development; including making your practice public within the school

• Work collaboratively with all staff to uphold a strong culture of learning

• Attend all staff meetings and additional meetings as needed; including in-services, open houses and parent conferences

Support Specials and Language Classes:

• Be fully present in Spanish and specials classes at all times

• Actively participating in class, reinforcing positive student behaviors using specific language

• Support classroom management strategies and activities

• Reinforce hallway expectations before and after class (voice level 0, walking feet, line order, bathroom or water breaks, etc.)

• Redirect students, as needed, and support Take a Break spot, breaks outside the classroom, and re-teaching, movement breaks, conflict resolution (Peace Path), etc.

• Assist and support entry routine and getting students settled into the proper spots

• Assist and support exit routine, lining up, and transitioning to their next class

• Distribute any Spanish or Specials work on a weekly/monthly basis depending on the class (put work in student mailboxes or directly in backpacks, as applicable)

• Support the lead teacher in classroom management

• Lead small groups to support participation

• Redirect students as needed and support Take a Break spot, breaks outside the classroom, and re-teaching, when needed

Qualifications and Requirements

• Prior experience working in a school setting preferred

• Bachelor's degree preferred

• Bilingual Spanish/English preferred

• Commitment to working with underserved students

Pay: $22,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
