OVERVIEW

Founded in 1947 by Nina Vance, the Alley Theatre is a pioneer of regional theatre, and one of the leading nonprofit theatre companies in the United States. The Alley Theatre seeks local theatre technicians to fill overhire crew positions throughout the 2021-2022 Season. These positions are hourly, eligible for over time and hired on a per-show basis. No travel or housing compensation is available for these positions. Ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work in team-focused environments, and a desire to immerse themselves in the technical theatre process. The Alley guarantees a minimum of 32 hours per regular eight show week for all run crew positions, with an average of 50 hours during tech week.

JOB STATEMENT*
Applied Theatre at the Alley (Alley Education and Community Engagement (ECE)) is a national driving force for innovative arts education. ECE pioneers arts integration, cultivates the next generation of theatre artists, and fosters community discourse.

The Primary Programs Associate will work to ensure the Alley Theatre develops high caliber, effective and creative arts integration and educational programs that serve Grades Pre-K 5th in the greater Houston Area and beyond. The associates main duties include:

  • Working closely with the Alley Primary Programs Manager and ECEs Administrative Director to implement the effective operations of all Pre-K 5th programs (6th- 8th when applicable for Advanced Play Makers)
  • Maintaining school bookings and scheduling details for in-school programs
  • Leading the administrative side of Alley Play Makers Camps
  • Supporting the development of Staging STEM/ELA/SEL and Alley Play Makers curriculum
  • Documenting success and troubleshooting within the field

JOB DUTIES*
Alleys Primary Programs Associate is responsible for the efficient operations of Staging STEM/ELA/SEL, Alley Theatre Pre-K through 8th grade camps and related programs, which may include one-off primary programming or Professional Development.
Working under the supervision of the Primary Programs Manager, the Primary Programs Associate will be the key administrator to ensure the effective execution of all Pre-K through 5th grade level activities. This includes the following responsibilities:

  • Supporting the ECE Primary Programs Manager in leading team meetings and in the creation and updating of curriculum and assessments for all primary facing programs
  • In tandem with the ECE Primary Programs Manager, coordinate and schedule residencies according to capacity and income goals
  • Guaranteeing program promotion schedule through emails, calls and visits are completed
  • Tracking revenue and project expenses, and execute necessary agreements and invoices in collaboration with ECEs Administrative Director
  • Executing rider, invoice, and LOA requests
  • Administrative communication and collaboration with grade level teams including scheduling grade level team meetings
  • Teach in classrooms as necessary
  • Assembly and hand-off of assessment and open workshop materials
  • Compilation, review, and distribution of assessment data and program feedback
  • End-of-year reporting on program statistics
  • Support the Primary Programs Manager in Teaching Artist (TA) management, including:
  • Recruitment of new TAs based on program need and department capacity
  • Engagement and supervision of appropriate Teaching Artists
  • Designing and conducting effective training for new and existing TAs in group and individual settings
  • Observing, co-teaching, and coaching TAs in the classroom when applicable
  • Assembling TA tools and resources such as binders and online guides
  • Successfully execute logistical planning and day-to-day administration for existing Play Makers Spring Break and Summer Camps, and any additional camp or class offerings when applicable, including:
  • Plan location and schedule, facilitate all space-related needs, whether on or off-site
  • Engage appropriate Teaching Artists, and work with the ECE Executive Manager to execute LOAs and employment paperwork
  • Work closely with the ECE Executive Manager to set income goals, budget, and pricing, and to track applicable income and expenses
  • Work closely with the ECE Sales & Marketing Coordinator to handling all registration and attendance details to meet or exceed program goals
  • Identify challenges and develop solutions to program implementation

Additionally, the Primary Programs Associate will: *

  • Work effectively as a team member to market, upsell and maximize the Alley Theatres presence within the community
  • Support marketing and documentation efforts by working with the ECE staff to arrange for photos and videos, and provide/revise program text
  • Assist other department staff with the planning and implementation of department programs, services and activities (conferences, matinees, workshops, trainings, etc.), when applicable

REQUIREMENTS (SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE):

  • Bachelors degree in theatre, theatre education, arts administration or comparable experience in a relevant area
  • Two years of relevant teaching or administrative experience
  • Experience in developing and communicating theatre arts curriculum
  • Experience in program administration, including sales and marketing
  • Capacity and interest in thinking creatively and administratively equally
  • Excellent computer skills are required-Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Photoshop and MS publisher very helpful
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lean into a flexible/learner mindset
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, energized and quickly changing environment
  • A proactive approach to problem solving with strong decision-making skills
  • Detail oriented, able to prioritize efficiently and multi-task
  • Ability to be self-directed and take initiative

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: *

  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to drive to various locations throughout the Greater Houston Area
  • Ability to lift and move 25 lbs
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where directions and priorities can change rapidly
  • Typical hours are during the day, but the position requires the flexibility to be available for weekend, holidays and evening work hours as needed
