Job Description
We are looking for a Principal Application Engineer in the Advertising Technology organization. This Principal Application Engineer is a senior individual contributor that drives vision, translates business requirements to product capabilities and develops a target architecture that supports our customers. This candidate also facilitates learning and delivery within Discover’s Martech Engineering team. This candidate possesses business & financial acumen to advise on product planning, conducts research & analysis and identifies business value of new and emerging technologies. This person will create an architecture that with enterprise standards and that achieves simplicity. You will collaborate with engineers & product managers and business to solve interesting and challenging problems across our Martech needs.

As a Principal Application Engineer, you’ll build and release reliable software systems at scale. By partnering with enterprise-wide teams, you’ll develop and maintain Adtech solutions like (Amazon Clean Room, Facebook Advanced analytics, Google Marketing platform to name a few) that fit our business needs. You’ll use your holistic view of all products (and their interactions) to design elegant solutions and strategize the future state of our larger technical ecosystem. By independently innovating and advocating for best practices, you’ll solve complex problems and guide the team on implementing solutions from inception to production.

Responsibilities
Collaborate and communicate with Enterprise Architecture, Product, Enterprise Engineering, Infrastructure teams within the organization for meeting objectives and deliverables based on product roadmap. Define and maintain the AdTech architecture and roadmap in alignment with our product, marketing strategy and Enterprise architecture teams.
Build custom solutions for Discover to move 1st party data into external third-party advertising platforms leveraging Discover policies and technologies such as but not limited to GMP, AWS, GCP, Megalista, Clean rooms, Adhub etc.
Build and advocate for and support quality-focused development practices (CI/CD, testing, operational efficiency, etc.)
Build engineering technology architecture decisions for product development and support overall AdTech needs and cross functional products as applicable
Documents design specifications and installation instructions.
Verifies the stability, interoperability, portability, security, and scalability of system architecture.
Collaborates with technology partners to select appropriate design solutions and ensure the compatibility of system components.
Creates solutions addressing high impact technology and business priorities
Competent in multiple contexts, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, and business domains and is the go-to person for many people (inside and outside of their team)
Participates in strategic technology decisions and learns how these decisions impact Discover as a whole
Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains
Coaches technology communities at Discover

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:
Bachelors – Computer Science or related
6+ Years -- Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related
Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Preferred Qualifications

If we had our say, we'd also look for:
Understanding of advertising platforms, ecosystems and concepts such as DSP’s, DMP’s, Ad Networks, Ad Hubs, Clean Rooms, CDP’s etc.
Experience with programming languages like Java or Python services and build highly available environment using proper design patterns.
Proven experience in software development methodologies.
Strong analytical skills and ability to multi-task
Experience as part of an Agile engineering or development team
Strong experience working with a relational database and NoSQL database
Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins or similar; Git/GitHub; Artifactory
Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD)
Experience writing unit and service level tests to ensure adequate code coverage
Proven skills in high availability and scalability design, as well as performance monitoring
Experience developing and implementing API service architecture
Experience in working in a cloud environment such as AWS, GCP or Azure.
Experience provisioning infrastructure with Terraform and Cloud Formation.
Understanding of messaging systems like MQ, Rabbit MQ, Kafka, or Kinesis.
Ability to adapt communication for effectiveness with business partners and other technical teams.
