THE POSITION

Principal Software Engineer - Team Lead - Small Molecule Drug Discovery

The Small Molecule Informatics Group at Genentech seeks a talented and experienced, self-driven software engineering manager to lead a small team of informatics specialists (systems analysts, software engineers) focused on delivering systems, software applications and workflows that are key to discovering ground breaking therapeutics. This position will report to the Head of Small Molecule Informatics and be integral to recruiting, mentoring, and developing software engineers who collaborate with scientists, systems analysts, project managers, and other software engineers to develop software and systems that enable cutting-edge research in small molecule drug discovery. The role will include both management and hands-on development. You will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists and software engineers at our South San Francisco, CA research headquarters.

The successful candidate will both work directly with and lead a team who works with cross-functional teams across the small molecule research organization. The team’s objective is to deliver high-quality, sustainable software and informatics solutions addressing urgent scientific challenges. Projects will span diverse technologies, architectures and problem domains, including cheminformatics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, high performance computing, workflow orchestration, web services and cloud computing. Work will include understanding, maintaining, and extending existing critical applications as well as developing novel tools. The common thread is creating innovative software solutions supporting small molecule R&D groups.

The ideal candidate will satisfy many of the following:

  • Masters degree or equivalent in chemistry, computer science or a related field (Biology, Physics, Mathematics, etc.); Ph.D. preferred

  • You have demonstrated success mentoring and leading software engineers and guiding them in developing their careers

  • You have demonstrated ability to develop and deliver software for a chemistry-focused scientific user base

  • You have demonstrated proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, or Javascript/Typescript

  • You have demonstrated proficiency with version control systems and automated software testing and delivery

  • Experience with computational chemistry, cheminformatics, data management, and machine learning algorithms, software, and frameworks is strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated success working with geographically distributed teams strongly preferred

  • You have a masters degree or equivalent in computer science or a related field

  • You have designed and maintained data models in relational databases

  • Experience with developing web-based applications and/or web services-based architectures strongly preferred

  • You have 10+ years of experience (5+ with direct reports) within the full software development lifecycle from requirements gathering and planning through deployment and maintenance

  • Able to present your work, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences including scientists, technical colleagues, and management

  • Experience with node.js, React, or similar technologies is preferred

  • Experience in a drug discovery research organization strongly preferred
