Job Duties:

The Sustainability Programs Coordinator is responsible for leading, coordinating, and evaluating activities to support and expand the Virginia Aquarium’s sustainable practices and initiatives. This individual will manage the Virginia Aquarium’s current sustainability programs and will provide guidance on sustainability programs and trends through collaboration with stakeholders with other the City of Virginia Beach departments, local environmental partners, and industry organizations.

Duties:

· Evaluate current sustainability practices and make recommendations for improvements to the Virginia Aquarium leadership.

· Manage the Virginia Aquarium’s recycling, organic composting, sustainable seafood, on-site water and energy conservation, and greenhouse gas reduction programs.

· Develop short and long term strategic, measurable goals for sustainability.

· Collaborate with Virginia Aquarium and City of Virginia Beach stakeholders, such as the Aquarium Conservation Partnership, to initiate, manage, expand, and evaluate sustainability programs, include green purchasing, energy conservation, solid waste recycling, resource and water conservation, greenhouse gas reduction, and renewable resources.

· Collect and analyze data on sustainability initiatives; collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to provide leadership with relevant analysis and recommendations on sustainability programs.

· Provide quarterly and annual reports reporting on key performance indicators and return on investments of current sustainability projects.

· Coordinate, support, and expand opportunities for staff to learn about and participate in sustainability initiatives.

· Coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure accurate maintenance of database of utilities usage.

· Monitor current programming and partnership trends within the industry and related industries and make recommendations.

· Develop effective partnerships with community members, organizations, governmental and non- government agencies with a focus on sustainability related initiatives.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to ten (10) years educational experience in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as classroom teacher, education specialist or curriculum development coordinator. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned.

Attachments Required:

Preferences:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Operations, Resource Conservation, or other environmental conservation related studies.
Two (2) years experience leading environmental sustainability programs in an aquarium, zoo, park, or municipal organization.
Demonstrated experience creating, evaluating, and recommending changes to sustainability programs.
Experience collaborating with internal and external partners to develop and expand sustainability initiatives.
International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) Sustainability Excellence Associate certification or similar industry certificate.
