Job description
Ballard Spahr has an exciting opportunity available for a Project Manager to join our Project Management Office (PMO) in Philadelphia. If you are looking to work for a truly excellent organization with many smart people in an entrepreneurial environment, then look no further. This position can be full-time remote, (Monday – Friday) if located in Arizona, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Dakota or Utah.
The Project Manager will be responsible for scoping, planning, and executing projects within Ballard Spahr’s Project Management Office (PMO). This role requires an experienced practitioner who is capable of exercising discretion, building relationships, developing plans, and leading teams to achieve successful delivery. This is a real leadership role within the firm and textbook knowledge is good, but it is almost always something that needs to be customized in order to be successful.
There are multiple frameworks for delivery within the firm that span from standard waterfall to agile. It is not uncommon for a project manager to manage both a packaged waterfall project with a vendor providing professional services as well as a custom iterative project with internal resources at the same time. Candidates must have diverse experience in this regard, including facilitation and communication skills that can help project team members succeed where they may not have experience working in a more formal project environment.
Candidates must have experience with building project charters, scoping custom and packaged vendor solutions (RFPs), developing all aspects of a project plan, building and leading a diverse project team, managing project invoices and financials, managing resource commitments, and formally closing projects. A key requirement for all project managers at Ballard Spahr is the ability to understand the benefit, solution, technology, and activities for each project so that the PM can truly be a leader and champion. Building a schedule and managing status are only a part of the role and understanding enough detail to successfully manage project work is a requirement.
Required Skills
Qualified candidates will be highly detail-oriented with excellent leadership, motivation, presentation, communication and conflict resolution skills. Must be organized with the focus to sustain a high level of quality and consistency at all times, have a passion for driving change and a desire to improve upon delivery processes and standards.
Required Experience
The selected individual will have the following:
- A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four (4) years of project management experience; additional years of experience in the absence of a bachelor’s degree will be considered. Law Firm experience a plus.
- Expertise in both Agile and Waterfall methodologies, including meetings/ceremonies, team structure, and deliverables, managing a project plan with an external vendor, facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution and building all aspects of a project plan.
- Experience with Request for Proposals (RFPs) and the delivery of vendor solutions, CRM implementations and custom built solutions, technologies, and integrations.
- Flexibility in all practices is required. Creativity and relationship building are key components of success where a perfect project world does not exist.
- Good relationship building and people skills, formal and professional writing and speaking skills and time management with meetings and deliverables are a must.
All project managers are part of the PMO and partake and contribute to its evolution. This evolution includes project intake, portfolio management, governance and communication, budgeting, financial management, and resource management with peer groups.
