General Description
This classification intakes, processes and maintains custody of items turned in as Property and or Evidence in ongoing cases made by officers and detectives of the South Fulton Police Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Intakes and processes all property and evidence for the Police department.
- Receives, classifies, and enters all data from incident reports into the records management system.
- Receives evidence from law enforcement officers; checks for accuracy, barcodes and places in property room.
- Receives incident reports from officers and detectives; submits as classified and enters into management system for reporting to the state.
- Inventories contents of the property/evidence room; disposes of property according to department guidelines.
- Trains personnel on proper evidence & property processing.
- Assists public and department personnel with requested reports; distributes reports and property in accordance with regulations.
- Processes expungements received from General Sessions, Circuit and Juvenile Courts; removes arrest information from the individual’s criminal history; destroys pertinent documents.
- Scans, faxes, and copies documents and reports for department use.
Additional Functions
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by POST certification; or supplemented by five years of experience in law enforcement to include lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
- Requires a valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving history.
- Requires state mandated property and evidence training by the Georgia Associations of Chiefs of Police.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must obtain and maintain Basic Law Enforcement certification. May be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications depending on area of assignment. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A thorough background investigation will be conducted by the City of South Fulton Police Department on all applicants who pass the initial phase of the application process. The background investigation includes, but is not limited to the following: polygraph examination, fingerprinting, criminal/driver’s history, and employment history. Upon an offer of employment, a psychological interview and a medical examination will be required.

All applicants must successfully pass the minimum Physical Fitness/Agility standards and testing for running, sit-ups, and push-ups administered by the City of South Fulton Police Department. Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's License at the time of appointment and be at least twenty (20) years of age. All applicants must conform to the following qualifications as required by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Act: Be a citizen of the United States; Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (G.E.D.); Not have been convicted by any state or the federal government of any crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal or state prison or institution; nor have been convicted of sufficient misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law, provided that, for the purposes of this paragraph, violations of traffic laws and other offenses involving the operation of a motor vehicle when the applicant has received a pardon shall not be considered; Be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record; Be of good moral character as determined by established standards and procedures; Have an oral interview with the hiring authority or designated representative(s) to determine applicant's appearance, background, and ability to communicate; Be found, after examination by a licensed physician to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect exercising the powers or duties of a peace officer; and Successfully complete a job related academy entrance examination provided for and administered by the council in conformity with state and federal law. Such examination shall be administered prior to entrance to the basic course. The law enforcement council may change or modify such examination and shall establish the criteria for determining satisfactory performance on such examination. Peace officers who do not perform satisfactorily on the examination shall be ineligible to retake such examination for a period of six (6) months after an unsuccessful attempt. The provisions of this paragraph establish only the minimum requirements of academy entrance examinations for peace officer candidates in this state; each law enforcement unit is encouraged to provide such additional requirements and any pre-employment examination as it deems necessary and appropriate.
