Overview:
The Quality Consultant collaborates with service line and unit leadership to develop, implement, and coordinate effective systems that improve patient outcomes and quality of care. Provides guidance in the areas of quality improvement and supports the mission of Nationwide Children’s Hospital by leading the performance improvements linked to the strategic plan.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with service line leadership to design a quality improvement (QI) project portfolio to meet the hospital’s strategic plan, service line performance goals, and Joint Commission standards. Participates in constant readiness program to ensure Joint Commission standards are always followed.
  • Utilizes project management and change management tools to help teams of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers improve health outcomes for children. Uses knowledge of improvement science and team facilitation to move teams toward reaching their project goals. Actively participates on hospital-wide projects and national collaboratives to eliminate preventable harm.
  • Uses knowledge of data analysis and statistical process control to turn data into information that teams can use to make decisions affecting patient outcomes. Assists teams in developing quality metrics, the knowledge on what data to collect, and how best to collect the data. Works with clinicians to present and publish work.
  • Uses the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model for Improvement as the basis for quality improvement work. Provides education on the IHI Model for Improvement to service lines, unit project teams, and to employees. Coaches physicians and healthcare professionals in the Quality Improvement Essentials course at NCH, which supports hospital-wide adoption of the IHI Model.
Maintains knowledge level and ability related to continuous quality improvement through reviewing relevant peer reviewed publications, attending conferences, and networking with other hospitals.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, healthcare, or business field.

CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification,or Project Management Professional (PMP) encouraged.
SKILLS:
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills necessary for proficient facilitation of meetings, presentations, relationship building, and the ability to communicate effectively to all levels of hospital staff.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data including ability to interpret statistical process control charts; ability to make the data tell a story that compels people to change their practices.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel to manipulate and analyze large sets of data using pivot tables, formulas, and graphs/charts.
  • Prioritization Skills.
EXPERIENCE: 2 years of experience in the quality improvement and/or process improvement fields.
