Job description
We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, CERN in Europe and the South Pole.
We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.
The SQMS Center was established by the National Quantum Initiative Act as a hub in a new cooperative ecosystem built from national labs, universities, and leading companies. The mission of the SQMS Center is to build revolutionary new quantum science platforms that exploit superconducting radio frequency cavities and superconducting qubits for quantum information science (QIS) in the area of quantum computing, quantum sensing and quantum physics experiments.

Fermilab’s Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center and Division seeks a Quantum Systems Technician to join the Ultralow Temperature Cryogenics Department. The department supports the expanding project needs of both QIS and fundamental physics research for expertise in cryogenic systems. Under general direction, the successful candidate will provide moderately complex technical support for the operation, installation and maintenance of cryogenic systems and the assembly and installation of experimental apparatus for quantum information and fundamental physics experiments.
You Will:
  • Work in a collaborative environment of people with a wide variety of backgrounds, experience, and ideas.
  • Participate aspects of technical support and operations related to QIS and other experiments at ultralow cryogenic temperatures.
  • Oversee installation and operation of cryogenic test stands and associated equipment.
  • Develop procedures for new tasks and follow existing procedures.
  • Assist engineers and other technical staff. Direct the work of junior technicians as assigned to specific projects.
  • Procure and maintain inventories of small parts and supplies for areas of assignment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and ideas. The successful candidate will work under the general direction of engineers and senior technicians.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, schematics and manufacturers’ documentation, and work with written or verbal instructions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Experience in one or more of the following technologies: Electronics/cabling, mechanical systems, vacuum, cooling water/HVAC.
  • Experience with the operation of cryogenic systems is preferred.
  • Experience with dilution refrigerators is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with lifting operations and rigging is desirable.
