Job Description

The Principal R&D Power Electronics Engineer will support Power System Design aspects on sustaining and new product development efforts within the Olympus. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on project engineer with a strong background in developing power systems, in the 10s to several 100s Watts) for chassis based products. This position will work closely with the systems engineering team to develop power system specifications for medical devices. He or she will be responsible for verifying that the power system design meets all specifications for performance and safety. Creation of product requirements, technical data, data analysis, and subsequent reporting will be an important aspect of this role, as well as helping to generate Design History File deliverables.


Within a collaborative team environment, it will be expected that he or she will be a proactive communicator, collaborate well with others, manage their work efficiently, produce high quality work and consistently seek additional knowledge and skills. Working knowledge of medical device design control requirements, system design and software and hardware integration and testing, and design for manufacturability and testability are required. In addition to contributing to device development.

Job Duties

  • Provides significant contributions to sustaining products, product development projects and/or technology development efforts.


  • Works with systems engineers to develop product requirements and design specifications for power systems used within chassis based Medical Devices.


  • Develops power distribution architectures that minimizes power loss, optimizes performance, and complies with EMC standards.


  • Develops component specifications and schematics and oversees pcb layout.


  • Implement product design with the intention of optimizing design for manufacturability and testability.


  • Utilize statistically sound approaches to design verification protocols/reports, design validation, and delivery system qualification activities.


  • Coordinate all EMC testing and troubleshooting.


  • Determines make vs buy based on engineering analysis.


  • Works with a reliability engineer to ensure the product meets all reliability requirements. Leads and participates in design reviews.


  • Builds and maintains relationships with external suppliers.


  • Develop verification and validation testing strategies, authors test protocols and reports, and ensures products meet and/or exceed established specifications. Provides regular updates to engineering and marketing leadership on product status and advancement.


  • Works with Marketing and engineering teams to create marketing claims. Executing testing protocols as needed during development and release cycles.


  • Stay informed about new tools, regulations, standards, and best practices of the industry. Supports leadership as required.


  • All additional duties as directed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.


  • Minimum years of related experience: 10 years with Bachelor's or 7 years with MS


  • Experience in Medical Device development and/or sustaining engineering efforts utilizing a stage-gate process.


  • Capable of creation of design control deliverables and input to the Design History file either independently or under the guidance of the project technical lead.


  • Practical knowledge of CAD programs such as Altium, Orcade, or similar tools.


  • Experience in designing and specifying magnetic components for power systems.


  • Familiar with power supply EMC and safety requirements.


  • Experience designing switch mode power supplies using topologies such as flyback, buck, boost, etc.


  • Knowledge of reliability analysis of electronic circuits.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows Office applications including MS Outlook, MS Powerpoint, MS Project, Visio, etc.


  • Strong troubleshooting skills.


  • Must be able to solve complicated technical challenges and use good judgement in making timely decisions.


  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with others, works well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.


  • Must be capable to effectively executing on multiple work streams in parallel.


  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Comfortable presenting information to team members and stakeholders.


  • Must be able to work in a professional open-space environment without distracting others.


  • Must have a positive attitude and capable of accomplishing efforts in a timely manner and with high quality.


** The anticipated compensation range for this position is $110,000 to $154,000 USD annually and the compensation offered will depend on the candidate’s qualifications.
