Rail Operations Manager

The Rail Operations Manager is responsible for operational related activities within the Primient transportation group. This position reports to the Director of Logistics and works closely with other areas in the Supply Chain function, including Warehousing, Sales, Production Planning, Customer Service, Procurement and Technical Support to meet customer expectations. This position will have a strong focus on Rail operations, managing a rail fleet of nearly 6000 railcars for food grade and industrial bulk products. Areas of responsibility include rail performance, equipment availability, car leasing, car maintenance, regulatory compliance, product distribution planning, implementation, and overall car utilization. This position would directly supervise one rail fleet analyst and two logistics specialists.

Responsibilities/Duties:

• Strategic plan for rail network and directly responsible for annual freight contract renewals with railroads, with support from Transportation Procurement.
• Develop strategies to improve and ensure on-time delivery of rail shipments to customers and terminals. Chair cross-functional supply chain team for terminal pipelines and ensure minimum supply disruptions to customers
• Responsible for comprehensive strategy on rail car leasing and replacement strategy
• Maintain strategic networks of shops, mobile units, mini-shops and storage yards with strong emphasis on cost controls
• Develop and maintain relationships with railroads, bulk, truckload and intermodal carriers
• Develop understanding of the T&L North American Supply Chain footprint and make recommendations for improved network utilization and optimization
• Develop and maintain relationships with railroads, bulk, truckload and intermodal carriers
• Interface with customers and trade associations
• Interface with Customer Service, Planning, Sales, Warehousing, Procurement and Production
• Maintain benchmarks and scorecard network
• Visit customer, warehousing and bulk station sites as needed
• Travel approximately 20%
• Other responsibilities as assigned

Required Skills / Education / Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred, plus 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination
• Rail operations and rail car leasing experience required
• Rail car maintenance and/or agriculture or food industry experience considered a plus
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

• Ability to interface with all disciplines of Primient, including customers
