AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program dedicated to ending poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations and public agencies. VISTA’s mission is to strengthen and supplement efforts in low-income communities to eliminate and alleviate poverty by engaging volunteers from all walks of life, all geographical areas, and all age groups in a year of full-time service.
By joining Volunteer Corps at L.A. Works, you will be placed with one of our nonprofit partner organizations to serve for 12 months and tasked with a capacity-building project such as: creating sustainable systems to expand services, recruiting community members to volunteer in local programs, establishing a database of program alumni, and/or developing partnerships to bring new economic opportunities in LA county.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be 18 years or older
• Pass a national service criminal history check
• Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status

Reading to kids brings volunteers ranging from college students to young professionals to retirees, into neighborhood schools to read to these children once a month, Reading to Kids aims to help these children associate reading with pleasure and to promote the value of education and literacy. Furthering these goals are parent workshops in which teachers provide training to the parents of the attending children on how to continue the benefits of the reading club at home.

Member Duties : The literacy organizer VISTA tasks will include meeting with key stakeholders (principals, coordinators, teachers) at our partner schools to discuss how to make our monthly reading clubs more engaging and effective, as well as help refine and discover logistical efficiencies such as the best classrooms to use and speaking engagements to address the students and their parents about attending our reading clubs. The VISTA Member will gain insight into the issues that affect LAUSD schools by engaging in regular dialogues with principals and key staff and teachers at our partner schools as together we work as partners to determine effective participation recruitment in our monthly reading clubs and discover the points of friction within the community we serve that can reduce participation and work together to create opportunities to surmount those barriers.
