MPF Federal has an immediate need for a full time Reference Librarian for its facility in Alexandria, VA. The qualified candidate will interact and communicate information face-to-face with client users and provide basic search support functions and related tasks at the designated public assistance location within the client's facility, known as the On-line Assistance Desk, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday excluding Federal holidays.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Work with government representatives from the client's branch to coordinate facility operations to ensure that work performed does not interfere or conflict with work being performed by other OCIO Contractors or client personnel.
  • Answer general information inquiries, using effective listening and oral communication skills, to address public users’ needs for patent and trademark information.
  • Answer and respond to incoming telephone inquiries at the On-line Assistance Desk.
  • Refer public users to points of contact and resources specifically identified by the client as authoritative information sources to address public users’ needs for knowledge about client publications, forms, access to patent and trademark information available on-line, Satellite Offices or Resource Centers. The client will provide detailed contact information lists and specific guidance for responding to different types of public inquiries.
  • Record public user contact information if a public user’s inquiry cannot be answered or otherwise addressed by contract personnel. This information shall be provided to designated government points of contact so that the client may follow-up directly with the public user.
  • Provide minimal client Reference desk support (e.g. answer and/or transfer telephone calls, direct public users to the client collections, and refer public users to available staff at the On-Line Assistance Desk).
  • Assist the public with inquiries regarding patent and trademark resources both in person and via phone (up to and including knowledge of patent basics, trademark basics, USPTO online search tools, the roles of the USPTO departments -in case the calls need to be transferred, the technical limitations of the software, etc)
  • In-depth knowledge of how to operate the a new search system (Patent Public Search Tool)
    • Conduct one-on-one training with the general public to utilize complex proprietary search databases
    • In-depth research of historical patents and trademarks, obtaining original documents
    • Test and troubleshoot software and computer equipment (up to and including printing, replacing toner, login issues, computer timeouts, power outages, training, installing widgets, etc)
    • Produce weekly and monthly reporting and statistics data on system usage and customer inquiries
    • Responsible for editing and updating training material and policy and procedures for major software revision
    • Assist satellite library locations with technical issues and searching of patent and trademark resources
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library science, or library and information science from an accredited American Library Association institution
  • Minimum three (3) years of work with research and reference experience
  • working knowledge of print and electronic reference tools
  • Must be able to recommend, interpret, evaluate, and/or use information resources to help patrons with specific information needs
  • Information Help Desk experience a plus
  • Must be US Citizen and ability to obtain a clearance
  • COVID-19 vaccine and proof of full vaccination required
