POSITION SUMMARY

Provides proactive shift supervision at all times to ensure the plant is operating to maintain safety, environmental, and operational priorities at the optimum production level. The Shift Supervisor has the responsibility to immediately report all emergency releases that occur to the Environmental Department for appropriate communication to local, state, and federal authorities according to applicable Environmental regulations. In addition, the Shift Supervisor acts as the Incident Commander during refinery emergencies.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High School diploma or equivalent GED required

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years refinery experience; prefer at least 10 years refinery experience, primarily in refinery process operations.
  • An understanding of fractionation, distillation, instrumentation, environmental protection, safety systems, pumps, centrifugal and reciprocating, compressors centrifugal and reciprocating, gas furnaces, reactors, exchangers, and more.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of the refinery process units.
  • Basic computer skills with Word and Excel.
  • Must have good communication skills verbal and written. Must be able to provide clear and direct instructions.
  • Understand how all units of the refinery interact. Know cause and effect of operational changes and the impact it will have on other refinery processes.
  • Ability to work with people, good listening skills and problem solving skills.
  • Fluent in English, both oral and written required.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Be knowledgeable on operating targets and strategies, and lead the operating team on their shift to achieve those results.
  • Maintain process units and utilities during shifts. When emergencies do occur, keep the loss of production and damage to equipment at the minimum possible. Adjust the operating conditions and charge rates of the individual units when needed for the overall operation of the plant.
  • Support environmental compliance by monitoring all refinery emissions to ensure corrective action is taken when needed. [Report all emergency releases that occur to the Environmental Department for appropriate communication to local, state, and federal authorities according to regulations.]
  • Evaluate, with input from unit operators, any equipment problems that affect the operation of the refinery. Determine when emergency maintenance is required and call out the appropriate people.
  • Review and discuss the lab test results with the operators to ensure corrective action is taken where needed. Report variances that require special attention by unit supervisors, engineering, or maintenance.
  • Handle the basic first aid needs of the employees and obtain medical assistance when needed.
  • In the absence of the Refinery Manager, the Operations Manager, and the Operations Superintendents, the Shift Supervisor has the authority and the responsibility of the refinery. It is in the supervisor's best judgment when an emergency condition occurs, to declare a "state of disaster", such as fires, tornadoes, bomb threats, floods. Authorize emergency shutdowns and secure emergency firefighting personnel. Authorize additional or special product samples, and utilize operational strategy for refinery fuel system, reliability of spare equipment, and authorize repairs.
  • Manage the refinery terminal for trouble shooting and operational problems on off-shifts.
  • Act as the Incident Commander during emergencies.
