Special Information:

Office environment in the Regional Headquarters located in Missoula Montana. The incumbent must be able to lift 40 lbs. Must sometimes drive a State-owned vehicle, must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Previous experience with ALX (Automated Licensing System) is a plus.

This is a Full time/Permanent position. Work schedule will consist of up to 40 hours per week, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. May be required to attend public meetings upon request outside of those hours.

In addition, a professional, cheerful, and personal steadiness must be maintained while answering the same questions repeatedly, dealing with irate customers, and concurrently completing existing projects. Incumbent must be able to work independently, efficiently and exercise good judgment in an office setting with numerous interruptions.

The office staff is required to answer questions from and provide technical assistance to the public and license providers regarding licensing, hunting, and fishing laws and regulations. The staff administers license certification. Accounts for all general hunting, fishing, trapping and recreational license sales through the Automated Licensing System (ALX); and for all inventory and general merchandise sales.

Job Duties:

Prepares, issues, and sells fishing, hunting, trapping licenses, nonresident snowmobile permit, Off Highway Vehicle Permit, State Land Recreation Use Permit, and non-resident park passports. Processes special permit applications through the ALX system. Sells various publications including brochures, books, and magazines. Verifies Montana residency eligibility using knowledge of legislated criteria and sound judgment. Certifies Montana residents eligible for disabled licenses. Processes special hunting permit applications and explains the drawing process as needed.

Assigns hull identification numbers (HIN) to boat owners. Obtains biological information from hunters, trappers and fishermen. Responds to inquiries from the public, in person, by phone, or by e-mail on a multitude of topics and activities including but not limited to hunting, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling, camping, boating, hiking and numerous other recreational opportunities and facilities. Explains and interprets department and program policies, directives, rules, and regulations to the public. Refers inquiries to the correct agency when appropriate, such as Animal Control, US Forest Service, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Department of Transportation, Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, County and City Agency, etc.

Dissemination of information must be accurate as this is often the only public contact with FWP for inquiries, complaints, and operation concerns or policy and legislative decisions. Provides administrative support to other Bureau’s within the region. This position maintains a database of accounts payable and submits invoices to Helena for payment. This position also tracks and orders our cell phones for the region. This position assists the Region 2 Hunter Education program by posting class schedules, finalizing classes, and providing information and support to volunteer instructors. Other duties as assigned by the Office Manager.


Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of job-related work experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Training Assignment : This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
