Self-Help is seeking an experienced, hands-on Regional Human Resources Manager to join our team in Durham, NC supporting the Center for Responsible Lending, our policy and advocacy line of service. This is an ideal role for a highly responsive, hands-on, experienced HR Business Partner who wants to be part of an organization that is a leading voice for ensuring economic equity for underserved communities and for promoting financial fairness and economic opportunity for all, ending predatory lending, and closing the racial wealth gaps.

The Regional HR Manager is responsible for ensuring that the daily HR activities and needs of assigned staff are being met. This position will provide HR support to our professional staff and management in a newly unionized environment. Support will include performing all HR-related duties in collaboration with senior management and HR Leadership including the managing of employee relations issues, recruiting for open positions, and coordinating the performance management process for the line of business.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for staff and managers. Consult on a wide spectrum of HR issues including providing guidance for staff member engagement, performance management and organizational development/design, including the development of job descriptions, etc. Refer benefits, payroll and leave uses to HR Operations team, as appropriate.
  • Proactively identify staff engagement opportunities to improve and enhance the staff member experience and in developing and implementing appropriate action plans.
  • Effectively recruit and hire top talent for the line of service. This will include managing the hiring process, building a talent bank and network to quickly identify candidates, and coaching managers throughout the process.
  • Lead HR initiatives within the organization and provide leadership on complex staff issues (i.e., investigations, progressive discipline, harassment or discrimination allegations, etc.). Actively participate and lead in the design and execution of all Onboarding activities for line of service to ensure effective assimilation into the organization as well as compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a credible HR partner to line of service managers and staff members.
  • Participate in special projects as needed and assigned and/or may participate in the development of more junior HR staff, if needed.
  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third-party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

Credentials, Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field OR equivalent related experience. Applicable HR certification preferred.
  • 6 years’ HR Generalist experience including experience in handling employee relations, recruiting, performance management, and organizational design.
  • Demonstrated experience working as an HR Business Partner viewed as a credible partner by the line of service supported as well as HR colleagues.
  • Experience supporting and leading Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
  • Strong commitment to our mission – creating economic opportunity for traditionally underserved communities.
  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration
  • Experience supporting unionized organizations preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work as well as juggle multiple projects to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and experience working with HRIS systems. Experience with UltiPro preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work overtime as needed.
