About this role
What you will be responsible for?
A global role with accountability to Identify, advance, & deliver major mining studies on projects that will bring value & improve lives through sustainable & responsible mining, including the termination of studies deemed to be uneconomic or of an unacceptable business risk.
Safely & responsibly implement high-quality studies in line with established governance processes, study management standards & guidelines to ensure the most robust & highest value business cases are advanced to make informed management decisions in relation to the scoping (Stage 1), pre-feasibility – options evaluation (Stage 2A), & pre-feasibility – selected option (Stage 2B) phases of the project life cycle.
In this role you will
Study Identification & Role Determination
- Work closely with Exploration, Long-term Planning, & Strategic Resource Development in the development of major mining study scopes of work & execution plans
- Greenfields pre-stage & stage 0 projects - work closely with Exploration in the early study shaping phase to ensure the definition of a robust Stage 1 study scope
- Brownfields studies - work closely with the region & key functional support groups to ensure the study scope aligns with the overarching business objectives & plans
- Lead quarterly Exploration/LTP/Projects coordination meetings to identify new studies or studies passing from Exploration to Studies
- Support Study Mangers to identify & evaluate potential project risks & opportunities, develop Execution Plans, detail results in Study Gate Reports & Investment Review Papers, & communicate study recommendations with key stakeholders
- Act as Newmont’s representative on Joint Venture Technical Committees & aid in the development of work plans for joint venture mega projects to ensure alignment with standards
Investment Manager
- Investment Manager on global major mining studies
- Act as the Primary point of contact for the assigned studies
- Assemble/coordinate multi-disciplinary teams
- Ensure that project control systems, reporting processes & resources are in place to track study performance against the approved scope, budget
- Ensure that quality & technical standards are in compliance with Newmont & Investment System standards & policies
- Maintain & ensures completion of all Newmont Investment System requirements for Stage Gate deliverables, peer reviews, application of opportunity & risk assessment practices, & use of Value Improving practices
- Apply a strategic planning process in a systematic approach that translates opportunities into robust & sustainable solutions
- Investigate, identify & act upon opportunities or risks associated with the project including all related financial, technical, social/community, & governmental/permitting aspects
- Develop & assist in the delivery of an effective community engagement & permitting strategy aligned with the regional & site strategy
- Review, evaluate & approve contracts for work to be performed by consultants or contractors; monitor budgets, approve plans/designs, & resolve problems
- Provide leadership in the resolution of problems associated with the study work
- Lead all aspects monthly study reports
Other Responsibilities
- Demonstrate proactive leadership in achieving a culture of health & safety including maintaining a high focus on safety & actively promoting Newmont’s safety standards
- Maintain pro-active & effective communication with all key site, regional, & corporate stakeholders on studies in region
- Participate in monthly regional study dashboard review meetings to ensure established schedules & budgets are achieved.
- Lead the development of study management standards & guidance
- Recommend improvements to the Investment & Value Management (IVM) team in relation to revisions & updates to the Investment System standards, requirements, & guidelines related to studies
- Support the Global studies team as the need arises to successfully deliver studies across the global portfolio
- Adhere to Newmont’s Values in the execution of the Study Director role

Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in mining, geology, or related science/ engineering technical discipline is required.
Experience:
- A minimum of 15-20 years experience in the mining industry in operations and/or projects with at least 10 years of project management experience leading complex studies on multi-billion dollar projects
- A consistent track record in major mining studies including experience with both greenfield & brownfield projects
- Project management experience, with highly effective communication & stakeholder management skills
- Mine planning & execution / operations experience
- Experience with Mass Mining underground projects or operations. Geotechnical & Ventilation planning exposure
- Experience working with global teams, & working in remote areas
Skills & Abilities:
- Confirmed ability to understand & synthesize cross functional information from functions including geology, metallurgy/process, mine engineering, geostatistical modeling, operations, projects, information technology, tax, treasury, financials, environmental, social, political, l&, legal, human resources, supply chain, security, & overall project management on three or more complex evaluations at one time
- Confirmed ability to work within & understand other cultures, including language skills
- Ability to think out of the box, drive innovation, & hold large cross functional teams accountable for results & recommendations that drive critical regional & corporate decisions
- Ability to communicate complex information in varying forms (verbal, presentation, report) to audiences ranging from technical team members to executive leadership
- Strong leadership ability to set vision & direction for individual evaluations
- A consistent record in early stage project development & value generation
- Confirmed ability to rationalize, budget, implement & coordinate large complex studies
- Confirmed ability to work with contracted technical experts, & local & corporate technical staff in global settings
- Experience in wide variety of projects, with varying financial drivers, varying project risks & project costs up to & including $1B plus
- Leadership & management competence to maintain multiple studies complete with independent study teams
Working conditions & location
Where you will be located!
- The role is based in the North American region with regular visits to the operations in the region & occasional visits to other regions, as the need arises
- While the primary location is listed as Denver, qualified candidates in proximity to any of our regional offices or operations in North America are encouraged to apply
The salary range offered for this role is $157,420 to 194,460 . The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.
This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
