POSITION: Nurse

RESPONSIBLE TO: Medical Director/ DON /ADON / Nursing Supervisor

SUPERVISED BY: DON/ ADON /Nursing Supervisor

POSITION/INDIVIDUALS SUPERVISED: Facility Clinical Staff and others as assigned by Nursing Staff / Medical Health Technicians

INTER-RELATIONSHIPS: Maintains open communication lines with facility staff, attending clinicians and physicians, patients and families. Liaisons with community agencies, vendors, and payor of health services.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Nurse is responsible for all Nursing related services for each patient and for linking patients to the physicians and to outside medical resources. They participate in the Interdisciplinary Team Meetings when necessary to inform the clinical team about medical issues and are available for emergency medical situations. The Nurse provides all services under the supervision of the Medical Director. The Nurse is responsible to provide medical & history screens, providing routine nursing care and overseeing the medical and psychiatric management of the patient in coordination with the attending physician. They are also a member of the Treatment Team and provide input into the development of the Master Treatment Plan.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

1. EDUCATION: A minimum of a Graduated from a Community College with a degree or diploma of Nursing LPN or Registered Nurse.

2. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 1 years’ experience in a chemical dependency/psychiatric setting, preferably in a detox unit and/or inpatient, partial hospitalization and/or outpatient setting preferred.

3. LICENSURE/CERFICATION: Licensed to practice nursing in the appropriate state; maintaining current licensure per state requirements as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Nurse Practioner (LPN). Maintains current CPR Cert.

4. SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Demonstrates Proficiency in Communication, observation & Written skills.

Knowledge of State & Federal Statutes Regarding Patient Confidentiality laws.

Knowledge of Drug-Free Workplace Policies.

Knowledge of Workplace Violence.

Knowledge of Corporate Integrity & Ethics

Knowledge of addictions.

Ability to interact with a multi-disciplinary team to assist in facets of the recovery program relating to physical health.

Knowledge of the 12-Step Recovery Program.

Knowledge and competency in problem solving, stress management, ethics and team building.

Knowledge of alcohol and other drugs that includes;

o Alcohol and addictive drugs and their physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual impact on the individual.

o Alcohol and addictive drugs and their impact on the family.

o Ability to determine if a medical emergency exists and to take appropriate action, when necessary.

o Knowledge of emergency procedures used in case of alcohol and/or drug overdose.

o Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.

o Knowledge of Federal, State and Municipal laws and/or regulations that regulate the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction, including: 

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO POSITION

1. Completes the following documentation within 24 hours of the patient’s admission to the program

2. Nursing Assessment

3. Pre-Screen Testing

4. HRS Consent Form

5. Patient Health Examination

6. Criteria for Admission Form (if Detox admit)

2. Transcribes Physician’s Orders and Implement all Medical Protocols as ordered

3. Administers medications and monitoring.

4. Confers with and assist the Medical Doctor and the Psychiatrist.

5. Makes appropriate referrals using referral forms

6. Attends and participate in all “in-service” functions

7. Assists with emergency situations and make immediate referrals

8. Provides documentation which reflects services for each patient in accordance with licensure standards

9. Maintains the Confidential nature of all patients and facility activities

10. Maintains required Training & Continuing Education

11. Maintains Standards of Ethical Conduct

12. Meets with patients requesting to see the doctor to determine the urgency of their medical needs and expedite treatment as required

13. Effectively communicates concerns about patient health to the Medical Director and follows up as necessary

14. Under the supervision of the Medical Director, assists in educating patients about health problems and medical care

15. Facilitates medication education for new patients and for all other patients starting new medications

16. Meets with therapists to provide information about patient medical problems

17. Assists the treatment team in incorporating medical issues into treatment planning.

18. Accommodate utilization review needs when additional information is necessary to provide further authorization to insurance carriers, this may be accomplished by scheduling clients to be evaluated by the Physician’s Assistant or Medical Director simply by communicating directly with a care manager.

19. Scheduling routine laboratory examinations or those ordered by the Medical Director.

20. Takes verbal orders from the Medical Director, documents them in the patient record and carries them out accurately and professionally.

21. Provides routine nursing care under the supervision of the Medical Director

22. Participate in regular meetings with Clinical Director to discuss specific patient problems.

23. Facilitate Medical Groups as directed.

24. Participate in regular department meetings and staff meetings.

25. Encourage efficient utilization of supplies and equipment to prevent waste.

26. Maintains effective communication between outside medical services and the facility

27. Keeps and shares records and equipment

28. Interacts with clients with compassion and respect

29. Attends in-service education programs as assigned to learn new forms, procedures, developmental skills, etc.

30. Has good work habits: get things done in a timely, efficient manner with no excessive absences; is on time for scheduled shifts and prepared to begin work

31. Functions well as a team member and contribute positively to the morale of staff

32. Performs additional duties, as deemed necessary by supervisor

33. Maintains up-to-date training in CPR, First Aid, Crisis Intervention, Infection Control, Fire Safety, and other areas mandated by organizational policies

34. Communicates effectively with other staff members and demonstrates the ability to work as a team member

35. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability, responding positively to changing situations in the work setting

46. Reporting and responding to issues of Co-Occurring disorder issues for all clients appropriately.
