SCHEDULE: Mental Health Psychiatric Ward –

• Day Shift is 7:30AM – 8:00PM
• Evening Shift is 7:30PM – 8:00AM, weekends, and holidays
• Nurses assigned to Charleston VA Mental Health Psychiatric unit can expect to work 12-hour shifts, with alternating weekend shifts preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• U.S. Citizen
• Years of Experience in the Specialty: Minimum two years current (must have worked within the last six months) experience in an acute mental health care setting.
• Minimum Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or in related field
• Master’s degree in Nursing or in related field is highly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The Mental Health RN is a professional nurse who provides holistic approach to the care of the patients requiring mental health treatment in the inpatient Acute Psychiatric Units.
• Will be responsible for the delivery of quality, age specific healthcare; for utilizing sound clinical judgement to ensure positive patient outcomes for Veterans.
• Assesses, plans, implements, supervises, teaches, evaluates, and documents patient care; serves as an integral member of the treatment team; and is responsible for helping to produce a therapeutic environment and plan of care to promote optimal health status.
• May provide periodic coverage for Inpatient Psych.
• Functions both dependently and independently with guidance and direction from the Nurse Manager/designee.
• Mental Health RN is a highly skilled professional able to work independently to optimize patient care, patient safety and operational efficiency for patients that are admitted to the Behavioral Health Recovery Unit (BHRU).
• Responsible for direct patient care within the behavioral health inpatient unit and facilitates the appropriate plan of care.
• Is expected to care for a population of male and female Veterans ranging in age from young adult, age 18 to the elderly age 65 and older and managing patient care promoting positive patient outcomes including areas of assessments: Mental Health Nursing Assessment and the Clinical Institute Withdrawal of Alcohol Scale.
• He/she is expected to manage care by promoting positive patient outcomes including the areas of medical and psychiatric emergencies, detox (withdrawal symptoms) and patient safety.
• Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
• Maybe required to work with COVID 19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for COVID 19
• Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs, providing care as necessary and influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
