NYC Accountability Reporter
The WNYC/Gothamist Newsroom seeks an enterprising and data-focused reporter to join the NYC Accountability team.
The NYC Accountability Reporter should have a broad understanding of how city and state governments operate and a proven ability to distill open and obtained data into distinct and engaging reporting. One of the newsroom’s largest teams, the NYC Accountability desk seeks to help New Yorkers understand how the city functions, allowing them to make more informed decisions on issues that directly affect their lives. Reporters on the team cover education, transportation, sanitation, and other public services.
The NYC Accountability Reporter will be expected to manage a mix of daily, short-term enterprise and longform investigations that will run as audio stories and text articles. The reporter should be eager to learn new skills and collaborate with colleagues on the desk as well as across the newsroom.
The job has a Sunday-Thursday schedule.
This is a key role in a rapidly expanding and evolving newsroom. The WNYC/Gothamist newsroom strives to make the New York City metro region work for the people who live here, and has ambitious goals to reach new, diverse audiences through impactful, audience-focused journalism. Our reporters produce high-quality content for live air, on-demand podcasts and Gothamist.
Responsibilities:

  • Report and produce original news stories in both text and audio form that are clear, thorough, fair, timely and accurate
  • Regularly monitor and FOIL for data, analyzing and interpreting data for stories
  • Occasionally collaborate with teammates through data reporting that supports investigations and help CQ other data-driven reporting in the newsroom
  • Conceive, source and pitch stories on a variety of topics that will engage listeners and readers, answering pressing questions and giving daily utility that drives audience habits
  • Consistently meet daily publishing deadlines
  • Develop sources that lead to scoops our audience can’t get elsewhere
  • Participate fully as a member of the Accountability team by contributing to coverage plans, meetings, brainstorming sessions, and newsroom projects
  • Effectively coordinate with other editors and digital journalists for maximum reach across our platforms
  • Enthusiastically participate in newsroom-wide efforts to improve workflows, policies, and various practices as requested

Qualifications:

  • Three years professional reporting experience at a reputable news organization
  • Experience working on data-based reporting in a newsroom
  • Superb communication skills, including public speaking skills, the ability to multitask, and experience covering government
  • Aptitude and comfort producing a broad range of content, including audio, text news stories, and social media
  • Experience with audience-centered engagement projects strongly preferred
  • Competence in SEO and other digital audience skills
  • Experience using production systems and software tools required to edit, produce and curate content
  • Ability to see the story that is going to engage audiences and to anticipate reader/listener interests
  • Demonstrated ability to tell compelling stories on government policies and practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to an equity lens in every aspect of reporting
  • Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism, and impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
  • The ability to work effectively with the public and colleagues at New York Public Radio

Additional Information*
This is a full-time role with a salary range of $84,413-$86,000 per year (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as parental leave.
This role is currently operating in a hybrid capacity, with the ability to sometimes work from home. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from the NYC office on specified days with regularity. This role has a Sunday-Thursday schedule.
Given this role will be in the office/studios, being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required unless NYPR has approved a specific religious or medical exemption in advance of the first day of work. At this time, NYPR defines being fully vaccinated as having received two Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations or one Johnson and Johnson vaccination.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
