JOB BRIEF

The Research Analyst will support the Executive Office and Institute staff with substantive research and writing tasks, and coordination of meetings and events to help accomplish the mission of the Institute. This position is based in Washington, D.C., reports to USIP’s Chief of Staff, and is an integral member of the Executive Office.

TARGET SALARY RANGE

Grade 8 - $58,000 - $60,000

The Institute uses the General Schedule salary tables for administering compensation. Offers are determined based upon candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Support:

  • Assists the Executive Office colleagues with substantive research and writing projects.
  • Conducts background research, and other desk and interview-based research as requested.
  • Reviews and edits products written by USIP or external authors and supports publication peer review and editing process as requested.
  • Provides meeting notes to and drafts discussion summaries.
  • Builds and maintains substantive expertise on a range of issues.
  • Assist in writing and publishing articles under the guidance of the Executive Office colleagues for the USIP website and other USIP and external publications.
  • Works with Institute Teams to define research priorities and identify partners and researchers.

Events and Meetings Support:

  • Works with the Executive Office to provide administrative and logistical support for working groups, conferences, dialogues, meetings and events in Washington, DC, overseas, in-house and virtually, including preparing event text, agenda, panelist bios, and hosting online calls.
  • Assists with drafting event text, agendas, panelist bios, background information, etc. and develops informative descriptions of events for internal USIP staff members and external guests.
  • Collaborates to ensure all logistical arrangements for program events, including reserving rooms, developing invitations, monitoring RSVPs, ordering food and supplies, arranging room set-up, and serving as the main point-of-contact for attendees.
  • Liaises with meeting participants as needed to ensure a successful meeting.
  • Coordinates monthly meetings as serves as the secretariat as requested.
  • Assists in tracking and maintaining contacts database.
  • Serves on USIP-wide events assistance roster.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree with two (2) or more years of experience international relations, peacebuilding, conflict resolution or related field required. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills.
  • A strong understanding of U.S. foreign policy and conflict resolution.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Advanced computer/technology skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities.
  • Strong skills in the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly MS Word, MS Outlook, and MS Excel is required. Strong computer skills in database usage preferred.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships and strong interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural communication.
  • Experience assisting in the organization of conferences, meetings, and events.
