Overview:
The Research and Course Development Assistant will

  • Polish lecture notes for COS 445 (Economics and Computation) and/or COS 521 (Advanced Algorithms) to a state where they can be considered 'finalized', and demonstrate a pristine example of what students are expected to produce on PSets.
  • Polish PSet questions and solutions for COS 445 and/or 521 to a state where they are precise and clear for students.
  • Do novel research in the area of Economics and Computation, and specifically surrounding combinatorial auctions
Responsibilities:
Course Development

  • Edit lecture notes for COS 445 (Economics and Computation) and COS 521 (Advanced Algorithms):
  • Include references for source material, and for further reading.
  • Include thoroughly worked through examples, and exercises.
  • Edit text so that it is an example of what a pristine writeup should look like.
  • Finalize the content that should be presented in lecture, and what should be additional reading.

  • Edit PSets for both courses.
  • Write solutions that are pristine examples of a full-credit solution.
  • Write and analyze sample partial-credit solutions.
  • (Maybe) produce new problems.
  • Help produce short videos explaining the rubric to students and graders.

Research

The applicant should perform original research, specifically in the domain of combinatorial auctions.

  • Fully understand the approximation guarantees of communication-efficient maximal-in-range mechanisms.
  • Consider posted-price mechanisms for subadditive buyers.
  • Aim to construct valuations that lie between fractionally subadditive and subadditive.
The applicant may wind up joining existing projects in combinatorial auctions with current grad students.

Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science
  • Research experience
  • Familiarity with education in CS theory

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong performance in courses on algorithm design or economics and computation (for course development)
  • Strong performance in research on a topic related to economics and computation (for research)
