Research Data and Statistical Analyst

Reports to: Huong Do

Hospital for Special Surgery (“HSS”) seeks a Research Data and Statistical Analyst for our New York, NY location (permitted to work remotely up to 2 days per week) to support clinical research in all phases of the data lifecycle from data design to transformation and analysis. This position will report to the Director, Clinical Data Core within Research Administration.

Essential tasks/responsibilities:
  • Review study proposals to determine data requirements and assist with development of data collection and/or data extraction plans to optimize data quality and statistical efficiency.
  • Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources
  • Evaluate data to discover trends or patterns that may impact data quality and interpretation and work with others to identify potential solutions
  • Perform data cleaning and management for clinical research databases and datasets.
  • Build and improve on statistical programming code to make data processing, analysis and presentation more efficient and reproducible.
  • Create analytic datasets from clinical data and large administrative datasets (e.g. hospital discharge databases)
  • Generation of tables and graphics for reports, presentations and publications
  • Contribute written sections for IRB applications, grant applications, and manuscripts for assigned projects.
  • Perform intermediate to expert level statistical queries, analyses, and evaluation.
  • Communicate regularly with researchers, clinicians, and other hospital personnel to effectively manage multiple, concurrent research projects.
  • Maintain current knowledge of data sources within the institution and data available from secondary sources (e.g. Census data)
  • Stay informed of statistical techniques as applied to musculoskeletal research issues by reading journals and/or attending courses/programming meetings.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Master’s degree or higher in biostatistics or a related field (e.g., data mining, health outcomes, clinical epidemiology).
  • Minimum 1 year or equivalent of work experience and/or research experience in a clinical setting
  • Experience in musculoskeletal research preferred.
  • Experience working with physicians/surgeons is preferred.
  • Exceptional organization skills, time management skills, and the ability to manage several concurrent tasks.
  • Complete proficiency in Microsoft Office and a statistical software package is mandatory.
  • Candidate should have knowledge of appropriate statistical analysis for clinical research studies.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, evaluate, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be well versed in developing and running database queries, report writing and presentation of results
  • Be able to independently learn new methods for efficient data management and transformation.
  • Effectively adapts to rapid changes in project or data requirements and changing directions.
  • Ability to be involved in, and prioritize, multiple concurrent projects and deliver quality service.
  • Can resolve issues quickly with minimal direction from supervisors; makes good judgments and renders solid decisions
  • Must have the ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times.
  • Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills due to the large number of professional interactions that will be required in this position
