Job description
The Research Development Officer is directly responsible for managing a portfolio of faculty within departments, schools, centers, and/or institutes within a broad, but coherent area of disciplines so that opportunities for faculty research are increased and external funding is secured to support these research endeavors. The Research Development Officer will work one-on-one with faculty to develop research agendas, and identify funding sources, provide professional development in research and proposal writing, communicate funding announcements/programs, and assist in developing proposals for submission to external sponsors. Research Development Officer will also support professional develop through workshops and training.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of faculty research interests, capabilities and activities.
Maintain positive relationships and regular and on-going communication with faculty in assigned area.
Serve as a liaison for the institution and funding agencies program officers regarding research and research funding opportunities.
Evaluate research capabilities within the University and assess opportunities for grant and contract support.
Maintain cognizance of current sponsor trends and research needs and advise faculty and their assigned departments/colleges and faculty within them.
Assist the department, college, and Graduate Studies and Research in setting goals for research and sponsored activity.
Develop, organize and/or provide professional development workshops for research and grant related topics.
Assist the Director of the Office of Research Development in planning, developing, and coordinating the University's research development program.
Participate in research and policy advisory committees.
Facilitate the development of interdisciplinary (or institution-wide) teams necessary for many funding opportunities.
Manage the proposal development process for large scale, interdisciplinary, or institutional funding proposals.
Coordinate editing services and quality review support services.
Provide writing/editing for faculty research proposals and/or actively participate in the development and writing institutional program proposals.
Perform related departmental duties as required.
Knowledge and skills in research development in a higher education setting typically gained through the completion of Master's degree is required.
Three to five years' experience in the development of research projects and grant proposals is required.
Considerable experience in developing and/or managing the development of research proposals is required, preferably within a University setting.
Master's degree must be in a field closely aligned with faculty portfolio.
Ability to work effectively and diplomatically in a professional manner as well as to develop strong relationships and trust with faculty, Department Heads, College Deans and university administrative and business staff; as well as externally with federal agencies and other key constituents is required.
