What You’ll Do Every Day
- Maintain mouse cages in a clean condition.
- Ensure mice have a supply of clean and fresh water at all times and are fed appropriate diets as instructed.
- Ensure mice are provided with enrichment items (PVC tubes, wheels, nesting material, and other items as appropriate).
- Maintain the entire animal facility in a clean, organized and working order.
- Record temperature and humidity readings daily.
- Give hormone injections as scheduled by the Research teams.
- Assist with mating and checking for copulation plugs.
- Examine mice daily for food, water, cage cleanliness and illness. Notify research team when any mice are found to be ill or deceased. Provide appropriate and compassionate care to ill animals.
- Ability to humanely euthanize mice when required.
- Maintain accurate records on all cages of mice.
- Receive, unpack, and put away shipments of animals, bedding, food, disposables, etc.
- Maintain research embryology lab and media prep laboratory organization, cleanliness, and stock of supplies.
- Conduct embryology lab and media prep lab shut-down every evening.
- Package and autoclave laboratory wear and disposables.
- Make aliquots as needed, following SOPs and recipes accurately.
- Monitor and maintain liquid nitrogen tanks storing research materials. Keep detailed and accurate records.
- Dispose of glass and biohazardous waste in accordance with SOPs.
- Assist with retrieving of packages and unpack supplies.
- Take inventory of supplies and request orders as needed.
- Monitor and record temperatures on refrigerators and freezers. Assist with organization.
- Assist with research experiments as needed, if time allows, after completion of animal care and general laboratory duties. Experiments may include but are not limited to; clinical media development, collection of murine and bovine oocytes and embryos, reading slides for cell number determination, work in the EMR to gather patient data, perform MESA’s and/or sperm preparations.
- Participate in weekend work rotation.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong ability to follow procedures and protocols is essential.
- Strong computer skills, ability to use basic office equipment required as well as knowledge of computer data base programs with data entry system experience.
- Must be able to enter data into database system accurately and efficiently, paying close attention to detail with minimal chance for errors.
- Must be organized with a strong ability to multi-task, prioritize, have strong attention to detail, and a strong ability to utilize time efficiently.
- Must have a strong ability to act independently as well as be able to work effectively in a team.
- Must have excellent customer service skills, exhibiting courteous, compassionate, and respectful treatment of internal and external customers at all times.
- Must consistently display a positive attitude and flexibility in changing situations.
- Must have excellent communication skills, and make it a priority to consistently communicate positively and professionally with all staff members, physicians and patients.
- Must demonstrate the ability to be a good team player and possess a willingness to perform duties that are assigned or delegated in a timely manner.
- Participate in identifying problems and suggesting solutions.
- Maintain confidentiality of all work information.
- Maintain strict confidentiality for all patient and clinic information, consistent with established security and confidentiality policies and HIPAA regulations at all times.
- Understand and assess domestic violence and child abuse issues and reporting responsibilities. Will report concerns to Medical Director or Research Director.
- Ability to work weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis with other teammates.
- Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, and/or a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences, Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, or a related field is required.
- Previous animal handling and care experience required.
- Previous experience in an animal research setting, especially rodent, strongly preferred.
- Previous medical or research experience preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Working Conditions
This job operates in a professional office and clinical setting with frequent use of medical instrumentation and equipment, supplies and material. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, including computer keyboards and mice; telephones, photocopiers, scanners, and filing cabinets.
The duties of this position involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues or a potential for spills and splashes from them. Appropriate protective measures are required for every employee engaged in these tasks. The duties of this position also involve occasionally exerting 75 pounds of force, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently. This position requires the employee to stand for long periods of time and regularly push or pull large items and racks on wheels.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; will occasionally sit and/or walk; use hands and fingers to grasp, pick, pinch, type; and reach with arms and hands. Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; operation of standard office machines and equipment.
