In the Cantoni Lab we study MS an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS) affecting more than 2.3 million people worldwide and for which there is no cure. Myeloid cells are the most prominent inflammatory component in active and chronic MS lesions in the CNS and are implicated in damage and repair. Mechanisms by which immature myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are sustained during relapsing and chronic neuroinflammation have not been well addressed. How do immature myeloid cells contribute to CNS inflammation? How can we shape the myeloid cell heterogeneity as potential therapeutic approaches in neuroinflammatory diseases? How does the microenvironment affect immature myeloid cells during neuroinflammation? These are just few questions the Cantoni Lab is interested in.
The new Cantoni lab will be located within the Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center which provides a vibrant highly collaborative environment for neural and immunology research and a demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity equity inclusion and belonging.
