About the Department
The overarching goal of the Molecular Education, Technology and Research Innovation Center (METRIC) is to build a core facility that offers its clientele seamless access to qualitative and quantitative analysis for a diverse range of molecules for their research across multiple platform technologies and molecular scales. By coordinating three key platform technologies (X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and Mass Spectrometry) across the departments and offering them as an integrated portal, it is envisioned that synergy and collaboration will be maximized throughout the greater university community.
METRIC will provide the following services:
METRIC will provide the following services:
- X-ray crystallography: small molecule and macromolecular crystal structure determination
- NMR spectroscopy: small molecule and macromolecular solution structures, protein-ligand interactions, protein dynamics
- Mass spectrometry: small molecule identification and structural analysis, targeted and untargeted metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics, glycomics, mass spectrometry imaging.
- Education and training: each METRIC Lead Research Scientist will provide appropriate training to new users, enhance graduate and undergraduate education opportunities, organize educational materials, short courses, and workshops to support users, develop standard operating protocols for specific workflows, and coordinate to host regular forums for users to interact and share new methods.
Essential Job Duties
Primary duties of the Research Scholar, –OMICS Mass Spectrometry Platform Technology include but are not limited to the following:
- Help in the design and conduct experiments with collaborators
- Develop new methods for extraction, separations, mass spectrometry and data analysis for –OMICS research
- Prepare journal quality figures and experimental sections in collaboration with faculty
- Collaborate in writing grant proposals with faculty seeking to engage in –OMICS research
- Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and workflows within METRIC
- Perform routine maintenance and instrument calibration. This is a strategic area for growth and expansion of the Molecular Education, Technology, and Research Innovation Center (METRIC) at NC State University.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- A PhD in a relevant field (or relevant terminal degree) or Master’s degree in a relevant field, with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work experience in modern off-line and in-line separations / mass spectrometry research methods.
Other Required Qualifications
- Significant experience in sample preparation in the area of –OMICS investigations, as well as effective operation of HRAM mass spectrometry platforms, tandem MS.
- Well-versed in quantification approaches and quality assurance/quality control.
- Effective experimental design, presentation skills, data analysis and scientific writing.
- Ability to work effectively with collaborators, as well as ability to carefully and effectively undertake sophisticated –OMICS based mass spectrometry measurements in METRIC.
- Demonstrated ability to develop workflows and SOPs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D in Analytical Chemistry with a focus on biological mass spectrometry is highly preferred.
- Experience with modern mass spectrometry platforms including SLIM-Q-TOF, Ambient Ionization Sources, Mass Spectrometry Imaging, Metabolomics, Proteomics and/or LC-NMR-MS background.
- Experience in untargeted and targeted -OMICS and lipidomics, advanced separations, HRAM mass spectrometry, tandem MS, quantification, IROA, credentialing, bioinformatics, and mass spectrometry imaging.
- Strong publication record.
- Published record of achievements in –OMICS research.
