MAPSCorps Summer Research Supervisor

Organization:

MAPSCorps is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based on the south side of Chicago. Born from the South Side Health and Vitality Studies at the University of Chicago, MAPSCorps uses an approach called asset-based, community-engaged research to ensure that our science serves community priorities and needs.

MAPSCorps employs and delivers STEM and health-focused programming to local high school youth who collect existing resources in an assigned community. Working in teams over the summer, MAPSCorps participants observe, collect, and analyze data about all public-facing businesses and organizations. Utilizing our collected data, high school students work as youth researchers while Research Supervisors assist in preparing an extensive research project focusing on the social determinants of health. Youth-led research findings and public health policy proposals are presented to community stakeholders, urban planners, elected officials, and researchers.


Position Description:

Research Supervisors are core high school faculty or college readiness educators who ensure high-quality data collection and are responsible for implementing the MAPSCorps STEM-based curriculum. Research Supervisors are trained in data collection methods and are responsible for training high school students with the support of Research Instructors (MAPSCorps alumni or college students). Working very closely with MAPSCorps programming personnel, Research Supervisors take on a nuanced mentorship role in building trust and relationships with MAPSCorps’ Research Instructors and Data Interns who serve as near-peer mentors to high school youth. This mentorship is intended to enhance learning objectives, provide broad academic and professional guidance, and ensure a meaningful developmental experience that increases students’ educational attainment, professional development, and college and career readiness.

The Research Supervisor is responsible for the logistical and resource management for the MAPSCorps program. The Research Supervisor collaborates with the MAPSCorps programming personnel, Research Instructors, Data Interns, and community-based organizations (CBOs) to plan for and handle the day-to-day management of student and staff safety related to the classroom, surveying, commuter activities, etc. The Research Supervisor sets a professional tone for the program and serves as a positive role model for staff and students.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Mandatory attendance at Research Supervisor Orientation and professional development sessions.
  • Review all site and staff materials and return completed paperwork as required
  • Follow and enforce all MAPSCorps rules included in the staff handbook or communicated by MAPSCorps programming personnel
  • Respond to parent and staff calls promptly
  • Conduct training, clarify expectations, and provide timely, constructive feedback to Research Instructors
  • Collaborate with MAPSCorps programming personnel to provide timely response in a supportive manner to Research Instructors & Data Intern questions, needs, and concerns
  • Address staff and student conduct issues as necessary as determined by the MAPSCorps handbook.
  • Coordinate the use of space
  • Co-teach & model lessons on site
  • Observe and document site visits daily.
  • Create, collect, review, and collaborate with other Research Supervisors, Research Instructors, and Data Interns to refine lesson plans, and provide feedback on student work to ensure consistency with MAPSCorps goals, standards, and timelines.
  • Prepare & lead training for Research Instructors in collaboration with MAPSCorps administrators.
  • As appropriate, communicate with parents and MAPSCorps programming personnel regarding issues, including student or staff performance.
  • Must have access to a reliable motor vehicle for use during the program
  • Other program-related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience or interest in STEM, humanities, social science research, education, public health, qualitative research, and/or community-based/social science research or advocacy
  • Practical interpersonal and organizational skills are required;
  • Strong rapport with students
  • A serious interest in increasing educational attainment and college readiness of students (especially in math and/or writing)
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to manage conflicts with youth and adults in a mature and respectful manner
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Responsible, reliable, and trustworthy
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to teamwork;


Preferred but
not required:

  • Bilingual Spanish speaker
  • Experience working, living, or volunteering in communities across Chicago
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with cloud-based computing and databases

Training Dates: May 27th, June 3rd, June 10th

Program Dates: June 12th - August 4th

Time Commitment: 30 hours per week during program dates

Compensation: $23.50/hr
