General Summary

The Crime Research Tech is responsible for performing strategic, administrative and tactical analysis focused primarily on the work of the Police Services and Emergency Communications Bureau within the Ada County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of the agency’s Crime Analyst I & II positions. The primary responsibilities of the position involve the querying, cleaning and preparing of large data sets to be used by our Crime Analysts. The incumbent will assist in the preparation of a variety of analytical reports on crime statistics and trends. The incumbent must use critical thinking and independent judgement during project completion and must take the initiative to complete assigned tasks independently in a fast-paced working environment. The position is located in the Ada County Center for Data Analytics & Intelligence at the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

Essential Functions

The following functions will be performed under the direction of the agency’s Crime Analysts.

  • Extracts data from various databases throughout the agency utilizing existing SQL and Access queries;
  • Cleans and prepares data to be used in the creation of monthly reports;
  • Updates existing Tableau dashboards:
  • Assists in the creation and validation of new queries to further data extraction;
  • Assists with the production of reports on crime patterns;
  • Produces a variety of maps, graphs, charts, and data analysis for various sections of the Sheriff’s Office;
  • Processes and interprets data from a variety of sources and communicates the key information to various sections of the Sheriff’s Office as needed; and
  • Interacts regularly with the agency’s NIBRS team to identify and examine critical indicators of spikes in criminal activity;

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or a related research field with coursework in computer sciences/information technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred;
  • Experience reviewing and cleaning robust amounts of raw data, identifying anomalies and summarizing processes and findings;
  • Knowledge of or experience in NIBRS data entry;
  • Basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS),Tableau data visualization system or similar, and Computer Aided Dispatch systems (CAD);
  • Experience entering data into the Records Management Systems;
  • Knowledge of the general operation of a law enforcement agency and the basics of the criminal justice system;
  • Basic skill in the operation of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint);
  • Skill in solving problems relating to crime and law enforcement activity and in determining what information is requested;
  • Skill in creating maps, charts and graphs which illustrate patterns;
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and complete reports;
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently enter and retrieve data;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and law enforcement personnel;
  • Ability to quickly communicate information verbally in briefings; and
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a group.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a law enforcement agency; and
  • MSQL knowledge and understanding of database structure;
Other Requirements
  • Required to pass a criminal background check and polygraph; and
  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;
  • Requires sitting at a desk for long periods of time, up to 8 hours and ability to lift up to 20 lbs.; and
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, to permit the employee to function in a general office environment and accomplish tasks.
