We currently have three openings for an Interstate Field Auditor II.

These remote positions can be located within 50 miles from the center city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Houston, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; San Jose, California; or Baltimore, Maryland. There may be a Cost-of-Living adjustment added to the annual salary depending on city location.

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems. The audits are complex and include Fortune 500 companies in the incumbent’s designated geographical area. It is the responsibility of this position to review and audit, in an accurate and thorough manner, all tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure they are in compliance with the statues and to make appropriate adjustments based on the accounting records available. The responsibilities and duties of this position can be categorized into three major areas: auditing, selection and planning and organization. The individual selected for this position possesses comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and auditing techniques and has the ability to apply these techniques to audits of large Fortune 500 Corporations. The Examination Division focuses on computer assisted/statistical sample auditing to conduct its sales and use tax audits

Areas of responsibility include:
  • Perform complex and specialized audits;
  • Justify and defend audit findings;
  • Communicate comprehensive information on matters of complex nature in a concise manner;
  • Writes comprehensive reports of examinations that serve as the basis for changes and proposed adjustments in cases of considerable importance and complexity;
  • Investigates beyond what is reported on a tax return, and detects situations where the potential exists for taxes to be understated or expenses/deduction to be overstated;
  • Accumulate all pertinent facts and documentation;
  • Exercise adequate judgment to know when to end an examination; and
  • Utilize a variety of accounting systems, including computerized systems, including those peculiar to certain businesses and industries in order to make complex tax determinations.

Some overnight travel is required. NCDOR does not provide relocation compensation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
  • Demonstrated experience performing independent examination and analysis of sales and use tax and/or complex corporate returns, records, financial statements, and systems for accuracy, completeness and conformance to statutes and rules.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal tax issues, auditing and accounting theories and principles
  • Ability to perform complex, specialized audits.
  • Ability to justify and defend audit findings.
  • Extensive technical expertise in working with large complex (fortune 500) taxpayers.
  • Ability to communicate comprehensive information on matters of complex nature in a concise manner.

Management Preferences:
  • Three years of demonstrated experience performing independent examination and analysis of sales and use tax and/or complex corporate returns, records, financial statements, and systems for accuracy, completeness and conformance to statutes and rules.
  • Advanced accounting degree or CPA certificate.
  • Knowledge of federal corporate income tax.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience as a Field Auditor I or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
