Job DescriptionThis position is a journey level job in the Sanitation Division responsible for driving and operating a trash collection or compactor truck and the brush collection truck with trailer as assigned. Responsible for ensuring that all trash, garbage, or brush is collected on residential routes including collecting trash and brush and loading onto truck as needed. Manages assigned crew production to ensure safety and efficiency of assigned route. Discuss crew and scheduling problems with supervisor.
Operates a trash collection truck on an assigned residential route to pick up garbage, trash and brush from approximately 575 to 800 residences.
Assists crew in picking up garbage and trash from behind houses as needed.
Monitors crew activities and makes adjustments to ensure work quality and safety policies.Adjusts the pace of the route truck as appropriate to ensure work quality and safety.
Empties truck at transfer station, compost site and/or county landfill by operating packer.
Fills out a daily route summary sheet and other forms and reports as required.
Runs brush route to include operating the Ramer truck with trailer one day a week or as assigned.
Picks up dead animals and disposes at animal control.
Performs daily preventative maintenance inspections on truck and completes paperwork on these inspections.
Washes and cleans the truck daily.
New hires must work as a relief driver and/or perform collection duties until a regular route is assigned.New employees drive the Ramer truck with trailer and must learn how to operate the controls.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May be required to perform duties in other divisions within the department in certain circumstances, including, but not limited to periods of heavy workload, natural disasters, and city events.These duties should not require specialized training or certification and will mostly involve tasks centered around manual labor.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications -
~ Must have a Class B Georgia commercial driver"s license (CDL) and a satisfactory seven-year driving history to include no DUI"s in the last 5 years. Recent outdoor and heavy work experience preferred. Ability to drive with a trailer and learn the controls to the ramer.
~ Must be in excellent physical condition and ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination. Ability to lift and carry garbage/trash/brush loads weighing approximately 35 to 100 pounds several times daily.
~ Must be able to read, write, and speak English clearly and understand verbal instructions; add and subtract whole numbers; and carry out simple instructions.
~ Ability to fill out a daily route summary sheet, write charge tickets, and violation notices to customers.
~ Ability to communicate with Environmental Services employees and be courteous to customers.
~ Knowledge of the operation of a garbage packer.
~ Ability to use simple hand tools, i.e. shovel, rake, etc.
