The Prince William County Public Works, Solid Waste Division is seeking to hire a Scalehouse Operator to work at the County’s Landfill or Balls Ford Road Compost Facility in Manassas, Virginia. The ideal candidate will have a high-school diploma and a minimum of two years of full-time experience with cash handling and front-line customer service. Fluency in both English and Spanish languages is also a plus. ABOUT THIS ROLE:

This position works with a team of other employees responsible for operating all functions of the scalehouse including data management software and computerized vehicle scales. The Scalehouse Operator is typically the first point of contact for customers using the County’s landfill or compost facility. The successful candidate will answer customers’ questions, accurately assess and collect fees, enter required data into the scale software system, reconcile receipts at the end of the shift, and prepare deposits and other documentation. This position may also provide general clerical support to other staff.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• An 8th-grade education is required. A high school diploma is preferred.
• No experience is required for this position. A minimum of 2 years of full-time experience with cash handling and computer-based data entry is preferred.
• A minimum of 2 years of front-line customer service experience in a fast-paced or high-pressure environment is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Strong basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Knowledge of proper cash handling procedures and reconciliation of receipts.
• Exceptional attention to detail and ability to perform accurate computer data entry.
• Proficiency using computers and related software applications.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and adapt to change.
• Excellent customer service skills including the ability to maintain composure and tact when faced with difficult people or situations.
• Ability to follow directions, be on time, work effectively as part of a team, and communicate respectfully with coworkers and the public at all times.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position is considered to be an essential, on-call employee. A background check and credit check are conditions of employment for this position.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

Work schedules are determined based on coverage of landfill and compost facility operations, which are seven days a week, 361 days a year. Employees are eligible for overtime and holiday pay. Working overtime, as well as weekends and some holidays, is required depending on staffing levels, assigned shift, and workload.

Typical work shifts for the Scalehouse Operator teams are either Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday. The teams may rotate shifts each month. Work hours are generally 5:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. or 10:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Workdays and hours vary depending on staffing levels.

ENTRY SALARY RANGE:

$18.94 to $29.60 per hour
