The School (Military-Connected) Counselor may be assigned to work at the elementary, middle, and high school levels providing appropriate services for all students; particularly military-connected students. Additionally, the School (Military- Connected) Counselor will develop, select and modify school counseling lessons and materials to meet the needs of all students, with a specific emphasis on the unique needs of military-connected students and families.

Other Responsibilities of the School (Military-Connected) Counselor include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve all students, but is specifically responsible for military-connected students.
  • Assist military families with challenges related to military transitions into and out of the division.
  • Assist students with military family challenges including deployments and returning wounded warriors.
  • Communicate available school, community, and military resources and events to military families.
  • Conduct training to all faculty about Military Interstate Compact, the needs of military children/families, and resources to assist them.
  • Respond to Military Interstate Compact questions from parents & registrars.
  • Communicate and coordinate with local School Liaison Officers (SLOs).
  • Develop and deliver 4-6 week group lesson plans on transitions (deployment and moving) at the elementary and middle school levels.
  • Support JS2S and S2S student transition programs.
  • Conduct parent nights for military families at elementary, middle, and high school levels.
  • Assist military families and students in secondary and post-secondary planning.
  • Promote awareness of the military-connected school counselor position.
  • Attend Virginia?s Interstate Compact meetings (3-4 per year, usually in Richmond, VA).
  • Maintain an active public relations program for the school?s counseling department and military-connected students.

  • Serve with parents, faculty and other student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives for military-connected students.
  • Inform military-connected students of all post-secondary options.
  • Inform military-connected students about the importance and availability of extracurricular activities.
  • Support individual academic program planning and updating of 4-yerar plans for military-connected students.
