AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program dedicated to ending poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations and public agencies. VISTA’s mission is to strengthen and supplement efforts in low-income communities to eliminate and alleviate poverty by engaging volunteers from all walks of life, all geographical areas, and all age groups in a year of full-time service.
By joining Volunteer Corps at L.A. Works, you will be placed with one of our nonprofit partner organizations to serve for 12 months and tasked with a capacity-building project such as: creating sustainable systems to expand services, recruiting community members to volunteer in local programs, establishing a database of program alumni, and/or developing partnerships to bring new economic opportunities in LA county.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be 18 years or older
• Pass a national service criminal history check
• Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status

School on Wheels, Inc. is a nonprofit organization made up of hundreds of volunteers who give their time and talents to support the educational needs of children (K-12) experiencing homelessness who have a daily struggle in accomplishing their number one job: learning. School on Wheels (SOW) mission is to enhance educational opportunities for children experiencing homelessness, from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with the highest quality education possible.

To strengthen and sustain the SOW High School (BUS) Program, the VISTA High School Coordinator (HSC) will develop, test, and establish programs and processes that will enable our organization to provide more effective and specialized support to students in grades 9 through 12. The VISTA HSC will operate collaboratively and cross-functionally within and outside of the organization to support in the design, tracking, and evaluation of our high school students’ academic outcomes and graduation rates, manage and expand our partnerships (including Meta/EdMod and Jusdeep), and ensure the sustainability of our high school initiatives

Pay: $2,054.00 per month
