The Science Editor is responsible for developing and managing content strategy and providing editorial management of scientific and technical decision-making tools, visualizations, and online products produced by NEMAC to assure that research project information and results are conveyed via the appropriate platform to the intended audience. The Editor will identify overall content requirements and prospective content sources and will develop creative solutions for content presentation, management, workflow, and maintenance. S/he will lead NEMAC’s data-driven digital storytelling process. In developing content, the Editor will synthesize and translate research project information on the national, regional, and community scales and appropriately communicate such information to the intended audience. The Editor will contribute to NEMAC’s user research efforts and will manage NEMAC’s social media presence.
The ideal candidate will also have 2-4 years of experience working with customers in an applied research environment, identifying user needs and defining achievable deliverables.
Familiarity with current environmental and/or climate issues is preferred.
Ability to conceptually organize and analyze scientific data, interpret such data, and integrate complex data and reports to derive key outcomes and messages is desired.
Prefer a candidate with exceptional communication skills and an ability to communicate scientific data to an identified audience.
Training or equivalent experience with GIS softwares and applications is a plus.
The ideal candidate will have experience in growing an audience and maintaining consistent engagement among a suite of social media platforms.
This candidate should have interest in targeting content for users through user research and website design.
Familiarity with Dovetail and Optimal Workshop softwares is a plus.
Experience mentoring or managing students or working with student internship programs.
- Ability to collaborate on the development of content management systems.
- Ability to apply writing/editing skills and knowledge of the basic principles and specialized vocabulary of appropriate fields to the accurate communication of scientific and technological information to decision makers and the general public.
- Ability to conceptually organize and analyze scientific data, interpret such data, and synthesize and communicate complex data and reports to derive key outcomes and messages.
- Ability to translate complex scientific information into clear and interesting narratives for an intended audience. Ability to manage client expectations and ensure projects’ timely completion.
- Ability to function as a central contact point for content owners/ project stakeholders.
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the successful execution of deliverables.
- Ability to assist with the development of effective, efficient, engaging, and relevant training in partnership with subject matter experts to increase the knowledge, skills, and abilities of workshop participants.
- Ability to facilitate and host in-person and/or remote workshops and educational training.
- Support the development of curriculum based on content strategy
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with appropriate software, including web-based content management systems (particularly Drupal), Google communication and publishing tools, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Hootsuite.
- Ability to quickly learn new and emerging technologies.
- Flexible approach, with a positive attitude, strong ability to multi-task, effective project prioritization, and communications management at all levels.
