This is what you will do:

Alexion Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca Rare Disease, is seeking an experienced DMPK scientist with expertise in drug discovery to join the small molecule Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics team located in New Haven, CT. In the role of Scientist III, you will provide technical leadership in design and optimization of ADME properties to support small molecule drug discovery programs.


You will be responsible for:

  • Lead DMPK-related compound design and optimization of ADME properties from lead generation to candidate nomination through structural modification, PK property improvement, and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with Discovery Chemistry and Biology teams for the effective cross-functional overall property optimization of new compounds and define strategies to support project progression
  • Interpret and summarize DMPK experimental data related to the in vitro ADME, in vivo animal PK, biotransformation, and perform IVIVC analysis
  • Conduct in vitro ADME and in vivo animal PK analysis using Winnolin software as needed
  • Serve as study monitor for outsourced in vitro and in vivo DMPK studies as needed
  • Develop new technologies and capabilities in discovery DMPK space
  • Supervise junior scientists and manage direct reports

You will need to have:

  • Broad knowledge of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics and experience in supporting small molecule drug discovery as a DMPK scientist
  • Application of an expert understanding of DMPK, physio-chemical property assays and biotransformation to discovery project support
  • Extensive experience in the design and conduct of in vitro ADME and animal PK studies
  • Experience performing animal PK analysis using Phoenix Winnolin software
  • In-depth knowledge of LC-MS method development, quantitation of drug and metabolites in biological matrices
  • Experience with Caco-2, drug transporters, and DDI assessment is preferred
  • Preparation of study protocols, data summary, study reports, and SOPs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including good presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. This position will require to work with highly collaborative scientists in DMPK, chemistry, formulation, toxicology, and animal facility investigators
  • Prior experience managing and mentoring junior level scientists preferred
  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in a lab environment. As is typical of a lab-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: lift/carry 10/20 pounds unassisted/assisted; work comfortably in an environment with and around chemical, biological, and hazardous materials; gown/degown PPE; use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; maintain general availability during standard business hours.

We would prefer for you to have:

  • PhD in Drug Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline
  • More than 8 years of industry experience supporting DMPK in Drug Discovery and development with expertise in small molecule discovery DMPK support
