Responsibilities:

• Knows instrumentation, has ability to anticipate surgeon’s needs by observing and concentrating quietly during operative procedure.
• Helps maintain doctors/surgeon’s preference cards and updates when necessary.
• Responsible for instrument, sponge, and needle count before, during and after procedure.
• Maintains good patient care and safety in the operating room.
• Maintains the instrumentation in good working condition, removes instrumentation from sets that need replacing/repair and gives to the Director of Perioperative Services, and notifies CPD personnel of missing instruments.
• Learns to assemble and operate OR equipment.
• Checks supplies for outdates daily and notifies CPD personnel to sterilize items as needed, cleans interior autoclave (solution provided) and changes recording paper as needed, completes sterilization log with all pertinent information, runs weekly attest and documents on appropriate form provided.
• Checks supplies, suture, masks, caps, scrub brushes and shoe cover daily and restocks, as necessary.
• Checks safe functioning of equipment prior to patient’s arrival in the operating room.
• Identifies, assembles, and handles instruments during operative procedure.
• Follows end of case procedure for care of instruments and equipment.
• Check’s sterility of items before presenting to a sterile field.
• Applies concepts of asepsis.
• Appropriately handles draping procedure.
• Opens sterile supplies properly.
• Keeps operative field neat, clean, and organized.
• Controls own movements in and around sterile field.
• Applies sterile dressings.
• Assists in completing charge sheets.
• Enters charges in computer for procedures in a timely manner.
• Performs humidity checks in each OR suite daily before room is set up and documents results in log provided.
• Works where assigned within the department of surgical services.
• Assists in other departments when requested to.
• Rotates call evenly between staff to cover surgery.

Position Requirements:

• Previous experience in the operating room as a scrub technician which has provided opportunities to enhance aseptic techniques and refine competencies in operating room technique and skills in scrubbing.
• Certification in Surgery Technology (CST) preferred.
• Availability for call on a rotational basis.
