The Seasonal Grounds Technician advances Denver Zoo’s mission and goals by assisting the Grounds Department with maintenance of zoo grounds and keeping the zoo clean and attractive. Depending on the season, other duties include, but are not limited to, providing routine maintenance of the Zoo’s exhibits, collection and disposal of assorted waste, snow removal, certain hardscape installations and maintenance, pathway maintenance, and general cleanup of grounds. This is a temporary position, with a six-month term.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo’s mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Perform trash and dumpster routes throughout the zoo.
  • Maintain and repairs various turf areas within the zoo and be responsible for related equipment.
  • Operate the sweeper, blowers, and related equipment to ensure all visitor pathways are clear of debris.
  • Pick up litter throughout the zoo.
  • Participate in snow removal operations and be available to work a variable schedule, including occasional holidays, on an “on-call” status for snow removal.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment used for maintenance, clean-up, and minor/major hardscaping projects.
  • Perform pre/post trip vehicle inspection on equipment for such things as fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, lights, and all related areas. Cleans and cares for all tools and equipment needed for job assignments.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Denver Zoo’s Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Act in accordance with Denver Zoo’s Values of: Welcoming, United, Curious, Courageous and Transformative in all interactions with staff, guest, volunteers, and vendors.

Other Responsibilities and Duties

  • Performs various tasks as assigned.

Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or a GED Certificate
  • 2 years professional experience in related field preferred, but not required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Outlook a plus.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral communication skills; ability to produce and maintain digital records and plans. Ability to read, interpret, and apply organizational policy and procedures and other written guidelines to work functions, and to work independently.

Position Conditions

  • Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Safe Equipment Operation basics.
  • Clear driving record.
  • Must be able to frequently and safely lift (raise or lower) 60 pounds.

Compensation

Hourly rate for this position is $17.00.

Benefits

This is a seasonal position and as such is not eligible for benefits at this time; however sick time is accrued.
