20-25 Hours per Week, Will be required to work additional hours to meet department needs; hours fluctuate according to library hours and operational needs.

Position Focus:

Under supervision, performs security duties at library exits and stack entrances, opens, and closes facility. Position will back up open existing coverage and will be asked to cover open shifts at Sterling Memorial Library (SML), Bass Library and Marx Science and Social Science Information Library; possible both day and evening shifts, 7 days per week.

1. Understand and remain current on all security policies, procedures, rules and regulations at the library. Communicate and enforce all rules in a calm and professional manner. 2. Operate a main desk location with staff/student access control, a video surveillance system as well as collection of the building’s lost and found. Provide information on the building, exhibits and directions to visitors. 3. Provide escorts to visitors, vendors and other non-library personnel to secure locations. 4. Perform complete tours of facilities with an electronic tour system to ensure the personal safety of staff, visitors, and property. Make daily reports of security and general maintenance problems. 5. Operate and monitor security alarm panels and camera systems for library locations. Dispatch security personnel to alarm or trouble locations. Make notifications to supervisors. 6. Provide security coverage during public and private events at any library location. Interact with both Yale Security and Yale Police during special events. 7. Check for suspicious occurrences and report all violations promptly. Contact Lead or Head of Security to report. 8. Perform inspections of all carried items, including personal bags, of anyone departing from the library. Ensures library material is properly checked out. 9. Responsible for all assigned security equipment. Removes and returns keys. 10. Performs opening and closing procedures in the building as scheduled. 11. May ask patrons or vendors for appropriate identification to restricted areas of the library. Answers general and directional questions from library users. 12. Check email, accept calendar proposals and check details for all events, classes and meetings on a daily basis. Check scheduling software for appropriate schedule and all related notes. 13. Remain in communication with other officers on site to disseminate and receive information throughout the day. 14. Reports all building, ground maintenance, and safety issues to Library Facilities on a daily basis. 15. Required to become CPR / First Aid / AED certified. Training is provided on the job. 16. Serve as a member of the building’s Emergency response team. Learn all emergency evacuation routes and procedures and be able to execute instructions under stressful situations. Respond to alarms and other emergencies in accordance with departmental training, SOP’s and post orders. 17. Maintains logs and records of occurrences. Fills out incident reports when needed. May use computer terminals to input and retrieve data. 18. Will be required to work overtime hours to meet department needs. May be required to attend training that is outside of scheduled work hours. 19. Performs additional related duties as assigned. 20. This position is designated as a critical function employee and is required to be onsite when the libraries are open. 21. Offer contingent upon successful completion of background check.

Essential Duties

1. Enforces procedural rules and regulations. Ensures the personal safety of staff, visitors, and property. Maintains security and safety for assigned area. Maintains working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes and admitting requirements. 2. May operate and monitor security control panels alarms, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance. Patrols assigned area including garages and other parking areas. Checks for suspicious occurrences, and enforces parking rules and regulations. 3. Responds to and investigates situations reported to Control Rooms. Calls Campus Police or other authorities to investigate suspicious activities or security violations that require intervention. 4. Checks vehicles in University and private parking lots for authorized parking sticker. Issues parking violation warnings, and tags and requests towing when necessary. 5. Checks ID cards of persons entering the facility. Refuses to admit persons who cannot show either proper authorization or cause for being admitted. Provides information and directions. 6. Explains rules and regulations. Opens and closes facility, ensuring that users have left the premises. Reports security and general maintenance problems to the proper authorities. 7. Collects and transports money, and handles small amounts of cash transactions when necessary. May be responsible for Lost-And-Found. Maintains logs and records of occurrences, completes necessary paperwork, and may use computer terminal to input and retrieve data.

Required Education and Experience

High school level education or equivalent and two years of experience in security, law enforcement, military police, or customer service; or an Associate’s degree and two years of experience.

References must indicate reliable attendance and punctuality, diligent performance, accuracy and attention to detail, and skill and tact in dealing with the public.

Must exhibit common sense and sound judgment. Flexibility in schedule and day-to-day routine.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to multi-task. Ability to write clear, concise reports.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to interact and communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with a wide variety of patrons, donors, and staff.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated general computer skills on Microsoft Office, email, etc. Required to be / become CPR / First Aid / AED certified.
