Role Summary

The Data team is expanding and evolving to meet the growing needs of an ever increasingly data driven organization. The Data team sits at the intersection of our academics, operations, student recruitment, innovation, finance, and people teams which all have data needs to drive their goals. The Data team also serves the need to progress monitor Ednovate's key performance indicators that measure our impact across the network. In addition, we seek to expand the role of the Data team to build the capacity of our schools through data literacy and training around accessible data tools such as Google Sheets. The team is made up of three core functions: data products, systems management, and research and innovation. The leader of our Data Team will drive our strategy around analytics and Data Governance, overseeing our Manager of Data Analytics as well as our Systems Manager. This role will report to the CEO with support from an external coach.

As the Senior Director of Data Strategy you'll lead the way in continuing to develop meaningful tools, reports, and analytics at Ednovate, while ensuring that the Data Governance and processes supporting them continue to strengthen and develop. We are looking for a Senior Director of Data Strategy to join our team to deliver well-defined, transformed, tested, documented, and code-reviewed reporting supported by clean, clear, and high quality data to help drive organizational strategy where trust in data is critical.

Responsibilities

  • Data Strategy:
    • Develop and implement the Data Strategy for the organization, working with the leadership team to prioritize the critical focus areas for maintenance, research, and development
    • Work closely with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure continuous alignment of goals and projections.
    • Build strong relationships with key leaders, including our executive leadership team, principals, support team, and board members.
    • Refine strategy to build a sustainable and scalable infrastructure that meets our short and long term data needs
    • Manage the Systems Manager to ensure Data Governance is developed and implemented with strong fidelity, and a high level of Data Quality is maintained at the organization
    • Manage the Manager of Data Analytics to help build stronger data literacy at the organization and tools to execute on our Data Strategy
  • Data Analytics:
    • Prioritize, review, and launch data dashboards, reports, and analyses using SQL, Google Sheets, and Google Data Studio
    • Ensure data products effectively meet the needs of the users and of the organization, and model data in a way that empowers end users to answer their own questions
    • Review and approve documentation and testing to ensure that our data sources are accurate and easily understandable
  • Data Governance:
    • Review and approve the annual Data Governance Policy and Committee
    • Drive organizational strategy for key data inputs to minimize burdens on end-users, reduce training requirements, and deliver on value creation
    • Partner with leaders across the organization to identify bottlenecks and pain points in driving pursuit of continuous improvement, including identification of long-term risks and opportunities as we grow
    • Ensure all relevant student data from external sources (enrollment, state testing, etc.) is maintained in Ednovate's systems with high and consistent Data Quality
    • Support Principals in the annual Academic Software selection and budgeting process

Qualifications

All successful candidates must be a steadfast believer that all students can achieve academic excellence, regardless of background. In addition, strong candidates will have:

  • Ability to facilitate cross-functional projects amid many competing priorities
  • Proven track record of using SQL and Google Sheets to transform raw data into actionable insights
  • Experience building data visualizations, preferably in Google Data Studio
  • Understanding of data warehouse architecture and modern data modeling techniques
  • Experience using Dataform or dbt (strongly preferred)
  • Strongly prefer candidates that are familiar with ELT workflows and the modern data stack
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong and effective communication skills
  • Experience with the Ed-Fi Data Standard is a plus
  • Experience with Python is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience in process building and implementation
  • Data organization, cleaning, analysis, and reporting experience
  • Experience working with PowerSchool SIS a plus
