Position Overview

Working within the Grants Writing Team, the Senior Grants Writer will play a critical role in helping the organization meet its fundraising goals by developing high-quality and compelling proposals, reports, and fundraising materials for private and public sector donors. The Senior Grants Writer position is an extremely dynamic role that works cross-departmentally to source and synthesize information and develop cohesive and compelling narratives to share with Root Capital’s partners and donors.

Responsibilities

Grant Proposal Development and Writing (40%)

Lead a proposal development team and/or function as lead writer working with inputs from team members in various locations for multi-year, multi-million dollar requests (new and renewal for various programmatic themes and geographies).
Develop and manage proposal development work plan and timeline that allows for appropriate review by technical and management staff.
Translate emerging strategies into compelling, cohesive narratives. Develop best in class messaging and content to substantiate Root Capital’s vision and strategy.
Gather and synthesize financial and programmatic data from relevant Root Capital program and operations teams.
Work with relevant staff to edit and finalize a quality submission that maximizes chances for success, including graphics and tables where required.
Contribute to project design for proposals, including:
Facilitate or participate in planning or design workshops to define program objectives and leverage the insight, experience and knowledge of Root Capital teams;
Identify and raise relevant preconditions, risks and assumptions;
Contribute to the development of a theory of change, logical framework, MEL plan, and potential programmatic activities;
Identify opportunities to incorporate cross-cutting issues and added-value elements into the program design; and
Collate ideas into a concrete design that addresses donor objectives and requirements, and develop outlines for full proposals or concept notes.
Update and maintain relevant records in Salesforce and internal systems.

Grant Reporting (40%)

Lead the writing, compilation, review and timely submission of high-quality reports per donor requirements.
Develop strategic messaging around Root Capital impact, lessons learned, and forward-looking strategies.
Support the coordination of information gathering on program implementation across Root Capital teams and regions.
Assist in data management, analysis, and visualization of program outputs for reporting purposes.
Update and maintain relevant records in Salesforce and internal systems.

Partnership and Fundraising Support (20%)

Support external-facing colleagues by designing and producing additional relevant donor materials, including compiling necessary data and developing donor requested collateral.
Leverage content expertise and institutional knowledge to serve as a resource for donor-facing colleagues.
Skills & Experience
Minimum 5 years of demonstrated success writing proposals and reports for private and public sector donors (e.g., USG, multilateral donors, impact investors).
Bachelor’s Degree.
Superior written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain complex subject matter effectively in clear, persuasive language.
Impeccable attention to detail, in particular ensuring full compliance with donor requirements including, but not limited to technical approach, formatting, and required attachments or other supplemental materials.
Strong data management and analytical skills preferred; familiarity with Salesforce and other databases a plus.
Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, work well under pressure, and meet deadlines.
Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, team ethic, diplomacy, and sense of humor.
Natural curiosity and investigative spirit; able to work independently, yet know when to seek support.
Experience in organizations similar to Root Capital in mission and profile.
Demonstrated skills and motivation towards gender and cultural sensitivities, championing organizational and staff diversity and upholding organizational core values.
Root Capital is a bilingual organization. Spanish proficiency (written and spoken) is a plus but not critical to the role.
