This position is remote within our NC, SC, VA footprint. Although this position is primarily remote, there are occasional events and meetings that may require you to work on-site at one of our Truliant locations.


Purpose of the Job

The Senior Staff Accountant position is responsible for performing a number of different complex accounting tasks. Their duties include assisting other accounting staff in daily tasks and to review financial data to assist in making financial decisions and to serve as backup to the Accounting Systems Administrator.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the account research and reconciliation process for Mortgage reconciliation processes.
  • Takes the lead in the process for lease accounting.
  • Responsible for reviewing and maintaining accurate reports and reconciliations for loan participations.
  • Monitors and reviews general ledgers for accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs daily, monthly, quarterly and year-end activity including monthly accruals and prepaids.
  • Interacts with NCUA, CPA and internal and external auditors.
  • Serves as a resource to outside agencies and vendors.
  • Files property taxes and ensures property tax bills are paid timely.
  • Assists with research and analyze financial data for internal management.
  • Responsible for the collection, retrieval and organization of data to identify financial discrepancies and resolves management inquiries.
  • Validates general ledger testing in the various core systems.
  • Reconciles autos and reserves to CURE account.
  • Responsible for the escheat filing process and ensures it is properly handled.
  • Ensures that proprietary, confidential and sensitive data is protected.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as back-up for Accountants and Accounting Systems Administrator as needed.
  • Assists with other tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Maintains a commitment to continued learning.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have sound understanding of generally accepted accounting procedures and concepts
  • Must have strong mathematical and analytical skills to be able to perform, interpret, and analyze financial information
  • Must have ability to analyze current procedures to adapt and streamline reconciliation process
  • Must have excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
  • Must demonstrate advanced proficiency in MS Excel, including macros and advanced knowledge in MS Office
  • Knowledge of accounting systems as they relate to reconciliations, ATM, ACH, Visa DPS, Credit Cards, Business Services, Real Estate Lending, Items Processing, cash balancing, Investor accounting, loans and deposits required
  • Must have ability to understand all business processes within the credit union
  • Must have exposure to mortgage servicing for Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and other governmental mortgage lending
  • Must be detail oriented and have good reasoning abilities and sound judgment
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks concurrently and able to shift resources and priorities as required
  • Must be able to work in a general office environment or remote environment
  • Must be able to complete all assignments with minimal supervision
  • Must demonstrate ability to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions
  • Should possess a strong commitment to providing excellent service to Truliant’s members

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required
  • Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer
  • Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds

Education and Background

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field required or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in accounting required, preferably in financial services
  • Exposure to non-accounting functions, financial products and services and their relationship to accounting preferred
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of the financial industry required
