As a Senior Writer, you will help showcase the value of AHIMA to our members and enhance communications about AHIMA’s positive impact within the healthcare industry.
Reporting directly to the Brand Communications Director, the Senior Writer is an excellent storyteller with healthcare expertise who will write and edit credible, engaging content assets for a varied member audience that includes but is not limited to students, health information professionals, higher education faculty, human resources, and other healthcare leaders within the AHIMA member base.
The content will map closely to the overall membership value proposition and AHIMA content strategy and be written to stand out on digital platforms for member highlights and advocacy content.
It will be imperative to ensure that the content is optimized for search, engagement, member recruitment, and brand language, tone, and voice.
This person will help support the Brand Communication team’s role in writing, proofreading, and editing highly visible marketing/communications content including but not limited to:
- Annual report
- Key Messaging Houses for member events/products
- Scripts for member videos
- Membership retention and recruitment campaign elements
- Member directed content: newsletters, blog posts, website pages, whitepapers, etc.
- Board election communications
- Outreach to Component State Associations and House of Delegates
Success will be measured by the quality of output, member engagement metrics, ability to develop high end copy under tight deadlines, adherence to brand guidelines, industry fact-checking/copyright rules, SEO optimization & page rankings.
The ideal candidate for this role:
- Is adept at researching, interviewing, writing industry-leading, high-end marketing/communications content for segmented healthcare audiences in a fast-paced environment.
- Has the ability to work with and learn from diverse individuals from various fields, including health policy, clinical, education, association, health IT, insurance, and legal.
- Has copyediting/proofreading experience, is comfortable editing content written by others, and graceful in offering feedback and suggestions.
- Possesses excellent cross-functional communication (oral and written) skills and attention to details.
- Has strong self-direction and deadline oriented, able to work on multiple pieces simultaneously, and high comfort level with electronic/new media publishing.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Storytelling and Curating content for member-specific segmented audiences (50%)
- Writes and edits exceptional high-end industry leading thought leadership content for our member audiences including but not limited to students, faculty, HR, provider, payer, and healthcare tech company professionals that drives consistent engagement.
- Employs a digital-first approach to creating marketing/communications/ content assets that are clear, substantive, and share-worthy and lead generating.
- Supports the overall digital experience by ensuring that the content delivered at each touchpoint on the member journey is engaging and relevant.
- Showcases members in a way that leads to “stickiness” and loyalty.
- Works closely with Membership Product Marketing Manager and the Membership team.
Research & Interviewing (15%)
- Stays ahead of the curve on three content strategy areas by researching credible sources and interviewing SMEs to deliver highly engaging content to members.
Optimizing for SEO (15%)
- Uses keyword research tools top optimize short, medium, and long form content that is easily found in search engines and consistently appears in top positions in search.
- Content supports the overall taxonomy on AHIMA digital platforms.
Analyzing content performance (10%)
- Employs a data-driven mindset and obsession with seeking what resonates best with each segmented audience and pivots to deliver content to delight our member audiences and ultimately drive long term loyalty.
- Aids in developing reports and analytics.
Ensuring brand voice and tone (10%)
- Supports our advocacy agenda and brand standards, raising the bar on deliverables to our member base.
- Ensures brand integrity by editing/corporate proofreading to ensure consistency with brand guideline integration.
Minor Activity
- Other duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications or related field required.
- At least 5 years’ experience as journalist and/or creative writer.
- Healthcare writing experience required.
- Familiarity with AP style writing guidelines and other editorial styles required.
- Association and/or membership experience highly preferred.
