The Skills Trainers are team-oriented mentors who provide evidence-based services to youth that are enrolled in services at Oregon Community Programs. Skills Trainers provide 1-2 hour weekly sessions to youth with a goal of skill development through pro-social community activities. They are under the direction of the Family Therapist and/or Clinical Supervisor and Outpatient Director.

Oregon Community Programs is a nonprofit agency providing therapy to children with high behavioral needs and their families, including youth in foster care. We maintain a respectful and inclusive work environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science field; or
  • A combination of at least three years of relevant work, education, training, or experience; or
  • A qualified Mental Health Intern, as defined in OAR 309-019-0105.
  • Must have a mobile telephone.
  • Must have a valid motor vehicle driver’s license, reliable transportation suitable for children, automobile liability insurance. OCP requires staff that transports clients to be a minimum of 21 years of age.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to establish a strong connection with a child or adolescent that combines warmth and humor with effective skill building.
  • Creativity and energy to demonstrate healthy play, recreational activities, school assistance, and a fun, positive, open-minded attitude. You will participate WITH clients in these activities so expect to occasionally get messy or sweaty.
  • Conceptual understanding of developmentally appropriate behavior for children/adolescents in the home, school, and community. This can be gained through working with children in many settings and/or an educational setting.
  • Ability to collaborate professionally with the youth’s clinical team, maintain close communication with Supervisor, and coordinate session interventions.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional boundaries in accordance with OCP policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate session scheduling.
  • Ability to understand mental health assessment, treatment, and service terminology; and apply each of these concepts, implement skills development strategies, and identify, implement, and coordinate the services and supports identified in a service plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A SKILLS TRAINER INCLUDE:

  • Provide community-based skill development to at-risk youth aged 3-20 who may experience emotional and behavioral challenges.
  • Model prosocial interactive skills and provide natural opportunities for program youth to practice these skills in real-life settings in the community.
  • Introduce and practice positive and healthy activities with the youth, such as (but not limited to): hiking, playing games, attending community events, playing basketball, assisting with school work, etc.
  • Introduce and practice developmentally appropriate positive and healthy skills such as making a good impression, handling disappointment maturely, initiating and maintaining friendships, taking turns, thinking flexibly, relaxation/coping skills, and independent living skills.
  • Use various reinforcement strategies to punctuate practice and acquisition of new skills consistent with the youth’s treatment plan.
  • Provide feedback and collaborate with the treatment team about behavioral observations and experiences with the program youth.
  • Assist with on-site childcare for program participants while caregivers receive services.
  • Document sessions by completing progress notes using an electronic medical records system either the same day or the next day following appointments.
  • Participate in training, consultation, and supervision from the Team Lead and Skills Trainer Supervisor.
  • Attend weekly skills trainer and clinical meetings

This is an hourly position with a flexible schedule.

Starting Salary: Begins at $18.04/hr, higher DOE and/or bilingual capability. Successful hires also have the ability to earn a monthly productivity bonus.
