Job description
In addition to having little to no access to nutritious food, or stable housing, the residents are left vulnerable for disease and illness. The Historic Westside is a food desert in that there are no traditional grocery stores within the community and, unfortunately, those who have tried over the years failed. There is a serious need to mitigate food insecurity. The need has not been addressed due to lack of funding opportunities. This program will move forward plans to construct a hydroponic garden to produce local, fresh, consumable fruits and vegetables. With technical assistance and guidance from federal agencies such as the EPA’s Local Foods, Local Places program and conferences such as the National Black Cooperative Agenda, city staff, community members and technical experts are learning about the possibility of co-operative developments. The program will establish a co-operative grocery store in an approach to provide fresh food, at a convenient location. Besides addressing the food desert issue, this approach is also responding to the need for an anchor in the community, becoming a community-owned asset, rather than it being owned by a for-profit business entity. The Co-op also has the possibility of being a place where food education, training and cooking classes for families, small food-based business development classes and other programs could be held.
Member Duties : will help develop a comprehensive plan to push this initiative forward, they would provide a specific description of the root causes, with an analysis of the social determinants of health, identify existing data measures, and set forth logic models to serve as the roadmap for the overall strategy. Establish partnerships and pipelines to work through neighborhood revitalization and co-op grocery stores. VISTA members will work with stakeholders and City employees to develop and operate a comprehensive education and job training center to focus on creating career pathways as a continuum from previous projects. VISTA members will assist the City by creating a framework for credentialed training programs in high demand and high paying jobs, including: Advanced Manufacturing, Construction, Trades, Health Care, and Information Technology. VISTA members will create a system for educating community members on critical workforce skills designed to expand employment opportunities
